JOHN STARKWEATHER, (3John, 2John, 1Robert), was b. in Stonington, Conn., 11 June, 1722; m. first time in Stonington, Conn., 27 March, 1746, Jerusha Smith, dau. of Ephraim and Hannah [Witter] Smith. She was b. in Stonington, Conn., 20 April, 1728 and d. there 9 May, 1751. John m. second time in Preston, Conn., 12 Dec.,1753, Elizabeth Belcher, dau. of Dea. Elijah and Elizabeth [Blake] Belcher. She was b. in Preston, Conn., 13 May, 1730. He d. in Stonington,Conn., 19 Dec., 1760. The inventory of his estate, taken 28 and 29 Jan'y,1761, amounts to 718-2-15. Mrs. Elizabeth [Belcher] Starkweather, m. second time in Stonington,Conn., 19 Jan'y, 1764, Rufus Hatch of Preston, Conn., by whom she had seven sons, all born in Preston, viz., Gilbert, Rufus, Elijah, John,Wilkes, Joseph, Seth and Ephraim. The father (and husband) d. 10 March,1776. She d. in Chelsea, Vt., 3 Sept., 1818. The following excerpt from the Connecticut Colonial Records, Vol. 9, Page 523, is of interest: 'May Session, 1750;--Memorial of John Starkweather, Jr., of Stonington,shewing to this assembly that some time in October last by a fall he had his right arm put out of joynt, praying that his head may be freed from paying of public taxes for the future,' etc. His petition was granted. The children of John Starkweather are:-- 77. Hannah, b. in Stonington, Conn., 22 Dec., 1746; m. Stephen Branch, son of Thomas and Zephorah [Kinne] Branch. 78. x. Seth, b. in Stonington, Conn., 22 Dec., 1748; d. unmarried in Preston, Conn., 25 July, 1773. The burying ground of the South Society, at (the now styled) Preston City contains his grave stone. His inventory was taken 20 Sept., 1773, being 117-8-9. 79. x. Jerusha, b. in Stonington, Conn., 21 March, 1751; m. in Preston, 18 Oct., 1781, Elijah Tracy, son of Andrew and Ruth [Smith] Tracy. He was b. in Norwich, Conn., 14 May, 1752. They went to Norwich, Vermont and we have not been able to trace them farther. 80. Belcher, b. in Stonington, Conn., 23 Jan'y, 1755; m. his relative, Mary Leonard, dau. of Samuel and Mary [Freeman] Leonard. 81. x. Woodbury, b. in Stonington, Conn., 11 Feb., 1757; d. on his return from captivity, says the church record of the North Society of Preston, Conn., on 29 Jan'y, 1781. Inventory was taken 11 April, 1781, amounting to 92-17-7. He was a private in Capt. Hewit's Co., Col. Latimer's Regt., of Conn. militia. They were at Saratoga in 1777, participating in both battles (19 Sept., and 9 Oct.) The length of his service is indicated by the fact that he was paid from 23 August to 7 Nov., 1777, as was also his brother Amos of the same company. 82. Amos, b. in Stonington, Conn., 1 Aug., 1759; m. Jemima [Gates] Brown. 83. Elizabeth, b. in Stonington, Conn., 6 Sept., 1761; m. Asahel Murdock, son of Thomas and Elizabeth [Hatch] Moredock. Her baptismal record reads, '1762, Feb. 4th Elizabeth Starkweather, daughter of Widw Elizabeth Starkweather and Jno Starkwr Deceased'
