Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby, was born 15 Jan. 1841 in London, England,[1][2] second son of Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby, and Emma Bootle-Wilbraham;[1] married there 31 May 1864 Lady Constance Villiers, daughter of Lady Katherine Grimston and George William Villiers, 4th Earl of Clarendon[1]at St. George Hanover Square, London, England,[3] and they had eight sons and two daughters; died 14 June 1908 at Holwood, near Hayes, Kent, England.[1][4]

Lord Stanley was appointed Governor General of Canada in 1888 and served until 1893. While in Canada, he and his family became avid hockey fans. In 1892 he donated a large silver cup to be awarded each year to the best ice hockey team in Canada. Today the Stanley Cup is the oldest trophy awarded to professional athletes in North America.

Stanley Park in Vancouver, British Columbia, is also named after him.
