William's mother, Sarah Ann Clark, Rin 520, first married Isaac Stanley, but he died in Feb 1856. She then married Josiah Northall in June 1860, but William, according to Baptism & Census records was born about 1858 so was likely to have been conceived after Isaac died and before his mother married Josiah. He is shown with Josiah Northall and his mother Sarah Ann Northall nee Clark, on the 1881 census of Pemberton, Lancs as stepson to Josiah and his name given as William Stanley. Further to this, information indicates that William was in fact conceived between the death of Isaac Stanley and his mother's marriage to Josiah Northall and that his true father,although unmarried to his mother was a man named Joseph Round Cartwright, a local brewer whose parents were Edward Parkes Cartwright and Sarah Round. This latest information came from Dr Chris Fisher, of Hatfield, Herts, who is married to a descendant of William Stanley.
