General Information

Hannah was born 22 Jun 1805[1] in Montgomery, Virginia. She is the daughter of Abel Stanley and Rachel Rayle. [2]

Newspaper Article

The Times Republican, Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa. [3]

News story, 50th Wedding Celebration of Phillip & Rebecca Carter Collins, March, 1931. A portion of the article is as follows:

Rebecca Carter Collins was born in Mooresville, Morgan County, Indiana, in 1846. Her father died when she was small, leaving the widow with eight children, six girls and two boys. In 1863 the mother (Hannah Stanley Carter) placed her brood in a covered wagon and with two other families left to seek a new home in Iowa.

Three weeks were required for the trip, which was filled with hardships that only pioneers knew. But even these seemed trivial when the death of fellow travelers necessitated leaving the bodies of these loved ones in a strange land. Reaching Marshall county, Mrs. Carter (Hannah Stanley Carter, 1805-1886) traded sight unseen a saw mill and five acres of land which she owned in Indiana for 200 acres of Marshall county land, 160 acres of which is now the P. L. Collins farm. With the exception of swamp willows the farm was unimproved.

Census Information

Hannah appears on 1850 and 1860 census records with her husband and children. She appears on 1870 and 1880 census records as head of household.
