Joseph was born in 1837 to Martin and Mary (Polly) Thornberry Stanley. It is believed that his parents had a total of eleven children (more research is needed) and he is listed with his parents and seven siblings on the 1850 Census in Mercer County, Missouri (see detailed census report below).
It is believed that he passed away in 1912; however see research notes below regarding his death. [1]

Joseph was first married to Sabrina Smothers in late 1859 or early 1860 (a marriage record is needed for confirmation). He is listed with Sabrina on the 1860 Census with his brother Hiram/Hyram in their household in Bethany Township, Harrison County, Missouri.[3] Joseph and Sabrina are believed to have had a daughter: Nancy Jane Stanley Woodward (1860–1922) before Sabrina passed away in 1862 (sources needed).
At the time of his Civil War Draft Registration in July of 1863; he is listed as unmarried:
Joseph Stanley in the U.S., Civil War Draft Registrations Records, 1863-1865
After the death of Sabrina it is believed that he was remarried to Narcissa Simpson (1848–Deceased) (marriage record needed) and that their daughter is Dora (Valdora) Stanley Isom (1870–1925).[5] Joseph is listed with Narcissa on the 1870 Census with his daughter; Nancy Jane from his first marriage and their daughter Dora[6] in Wakenda Township, Carroll County, Missouri.
Many believe that he passed away in 1912 however a source has not been located to substantiate this date (at this time). It should be noted that his second wife; Narcissa is listed as widowed with their daughter in the home of her widowed mother on the 1880 Census[7] in Harrison Township, Mercer, Missouri. Based on this information, it may be necessary to change his death to about or before 1880.
