Biography

Descendants of John Standlee generally agree on the following

  • John Standlee was born about 1745
  • John Standlee spent his later adult years in central Arkansas
  • John Standlee died in 1820
  • John Standlee was the son of David

There appears to be two schools of thought on the origins of John Standlee

  • One version of family tradition states John Standlee was born in Bradford England, and left his family behind when he sailed to America.
  • The second version is that John Standlee was born in this country, of a father with origins In Penn's Neck in the region where New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania converge.

Y-DNA evidence connects the descendants of John Standlee with those that trace their roots to the Standlee/Standley family in Penn's Neck.

As of March 2017 this profile of John Standlee has been connected to the profile of David of Penn's Neck, though this will be revisited if proof can be found to support the alternate version of his origins.

John was born in 1745. John Standlee ... He passed away in 1820.

Note the spellings Standlee, Standley, Stanley and other phonetically similar variations were used for this family.

"Story of an early Settlement in Central Arkansas" by Russell White Benedict (grandson of John Standlee and his wife Sarah, through their daughter Rebecca) mentions that John Standlee died Aug 21, 1820 and is buried about a mile above the mouth of Palarm Creek.

Per the above article John Standlee is born about 1745, and is referred to as "John Standlee of Kentucky" by his grandson, Russell White Benedict. The author states that as a consequence of the New Madrid Earthquake the home of his family was destroyed. They seek shelter with his mother Rebecca's family (John Standlee and wife Sarah). The John Standlee family was living in Missouri, just over the state line from Illinois, "on the banks of the Mississippi at Platton Rock, one mile below Herculanium". Growing up, Russell Benedict had heard the stories of how his grandfather had explored what would become Arkansas in 1778-1779-180 and picked out the location for his future home, and where he wished to be buried. At John STandlee's direction, Richard Benedict, and his three brothers in law, William, David, and John Standlee (Jr), set out for this location, to clear the area, establish homes and to return for the family.

To quote from "The History of Cadron' by J. S. Utley" [[1]]

"Goodspeed's history, published in 1889, (4) says that in the year 1778 John Standlee and others explored the country along the Arkansas river, and Mr. Standlee then selected the spot of ground on which he desired to make his future home. Afterward, in 1811, his son-in-law, John C. Benedict, with his family, settled in the county subsequently know as New Madrid, in Missouri. From that county, in the fall of that year, Mr. Standlee, Mr. Benedict and William and David Standlee set out to explore the country and were absent from their home two years. In 1814 John Standlee returned and settled with his family upon the exact spot he had selected 36 years before. Here he resided until his death in August, 1820. This tract was in what has long been known as the "Benedict settlement," in the southwestern part of Faulkner county."

This history passed down by the family of John Standlee, stating he had been in what would be come Arkansas, is substantiated by the land claim below stated he lived off the Arkansas river. As shown below, his brothers Benjamin and David filed similar claims.

What follows are (a) a set of land claims filed in the Kaskasia land office by members of the Standley/Standlee family and some of their known associates (As documented in American State Papers Volume 2); (b) a set of depositions regarding legal matters in regard to these claims (As documented in American State Papers Volume XVI ; (c) Rejected Land Claims of Louisiana and Missouri, (As documented in American State Papers Volume 3)

(paraphrasing correspondence with Sue Abruscato) Analysis

According to David Sr and Jacob's POA's (Power of Attorney), they claimed they had improved the land between 1783-85. We know that Joseph McCarty (grandson of David, son of Jacob McCarty and Catherine Standley) was born in Illinois in 1782, so they must have been there quite a few years.

So taking the 1783 date, anyone who obtained land had to have been born no later then 1762, so even David Jr had to have been born by 1762... Unless the laws there were different, it's normally age 21 to get land.

Note, the last group of records from the Rejected Land Claims of Louisiana and Missouri appear to be for David Standley Jr and his siblings, and not David Standley Sr (father of John and siblings). David Standley Sr. is included in the Kaskaskia land claims.

II. OF DONATIONS TO HEADS OF FAMILIES

We have construed the law on this subject in such a manner, as to suppose it meant to provided for all those who had become heads of families in the country from the peace of 1783 to the passage of the law in 1788 . We think the laws of June and August, 1788, and March, 1791, warrant this construction. Date originally saved: 16 MAY 2013

In the referenced source document, on page 319, John, Benjamin and David Standley (sons of David b. 1723) are shown together with claims filed for 800 arpens each. For John and David it is stated that they are claiming lands off the waters of the Arkansas River. This source document lists their claim as, Poss., Inh., and Cult. in 1781, 2, and 3. For Benjamin the reference is to Cassatte aka Cadron. The claim is stated to be the same (Poss., Inh. , and Cult.) 1777-1780. On page 320 Jacob McCarty (son in law of David b. 1723) and Joseph Standley (another son of David b. 1723) are each shown claiming 800 arpens off the waters of the AR River.

This biography will commence with the records of John in Kentucky, including reference to his whereabouts in 1777-1780.

Residence Between 1793 AND about 1809 • Logan County, Kentucky

Based on Logan County Tax Records for Logan County, KY for 1793 -1809 this can be the inferred place of residence for John Standlee and other relatives including Onecypheros Standlee. Note there were two separate men, John and Johnathon living in the area at the time. As will be referenced later, there are court documents that refer to our John Standlee as being of Logan County, so we can be sure at least some of these records, we can be sure this is John the subject of this profile.

In the writings of his grandson, in the years (1778-1779-1780) it is stated that his grandfather John Standlee first explored what would later become Central Arkansas. It is was then that he picked out the site of his future home. The statements of his grandson are corroborated by Josiah H. Shinn, Pioneers and Makers of Arkansas (Little Luck 1908) , on page 45, he states that John, Benjamin, and William Stanley (Standlee) lived at Casatete in the period 1778-1782. This Casatete(Cassiot) is a stream that flows in to the Arkansas from the mouth (or south) in the present Logan County. It can be inferred that the following was the source for Mr. Shinn.

(Beginning on page 115) Land Claims In the District of Kaskaskia Communicated to the Senate January 2, 1811

The following sets of relationships give context and support to the writings of Russell Benedict White when he stated that his grandfather was a Kentuckian (by virtue of his residence there for many years) who had explored central Arkansas in the late 1770's, and chose the area for his future home and where he lived out his final years prior to his death in 1820. There is some inherent redundancy in the various sources of corroboration.

Abraham Standlee b. Jan 1789 TN > AR Posted by: Susan Abruscato (ID *****8233) Date: April 18, 2011 at 12:34: 30 In Reply to: Abraham Standlee b. Jan 1789 TN > AR by Norman M. Arrowsmith

Abraham Standlee who was married to Elizabeth Parchment (daughter of John Parchment) of Stewart Co., TN was the son of David Standley/Standlee Jr. and Esther Tagert. Esther was the daughter of John Tagert. There is a deed in Logan Co., KY in which John Tagert gives his daughter Esther Standley household goods. I believe this was in either 1793 or 1794.

There is a case of disputed land records in the Illinois Territorial Papers that include Abraham Standley, David Standley, David Standley Jr. and John Standley. Abraham under deposition states that David Standley was his father, David Standley Jr. and John Standley were his brothers. He also states that Jacob McCarty was his brother-in-law. Jacob McCarty is our line. You can find his will in 1812 in Stewart Co., TN, with a John Parchment (his neighbor) as one of his witnesses...

The John Tagert that was the father of Esther Standley, can also be found in the 1800 census for Montgomery Co., TN along with our Jacob McCarty. Jacob also had a daughter Sarah, who married James Tagert, who hails from Tryon Co., NC. There was also a John Tagert who was the sheriff of Tryon Co., NC, which could very well be Esther's father or possible relative.

Sue sueskay at gmail.com

As pointed out by Sue: Due to the Illinois land records in 1783, John, David Jr, and Abraham would have to have been born no later then 1762 (1783 minus 21 years). Joseph - had to have been born prior to 1766 (1787 minus 21 years, 1787 tax list.)

Note: Mar 23, 1809 - John Stanlee and wife, Sally, of Logan to deed Wm. Forsythe, of Logan, .200 acres. witnesses, Samuel Mitchell, Abraham Standlee, James Ward and Wm. MCAlister. Deed Book C pg 21.

The above item is in the documentation from Logan County, KY. Sally was a common nickname for Sarah. This record establishes John and his wife in Logan County in 1809. The witness Abraham Standlee is a son of David Standlee Sr. as established by the Territorial Papers and other corroborating facts.

Note: In the Territorial Papers of Illinois (see source information). In documents dated 1797 there are Powers of Attorney (POA) executed by John Standlee, and David Standlee Jr, each stating they are residents of Logan County, KY. David Standly Sr. and Jacob McCarty also execute POA' s, and state they are current residents of Robertson County, TN.

A deposition of Abraham Standlee, dated March 12, 1798 states he is a resident of Tennessee (but currently in St. Clair, an inference can be made he is there taking care of the legal matters at hand).

In these documents the family relationships laid out are that David Sr . is the father of John, David Jr., and Abraham, as well as father in law to Jacob McCarty. The 1797 residence in Logan of David Jr., and John is corroborated by the tax records (see source information). Abraham was showing in Logan as well in 1797. The 1798 tax records for 1799 are the next year available, and Abraham is no longer showing with the others - presumably he had moved on to TN as reflected in the deposition. Wit h these pieces of information alone, it can't yet be established that John is the father of Ony, but Ony is residing near by owning land and paying taxes in Logan County.

--- It should be noted that in the POA executed by David Sr., and Jacob McCarty, the following statement is made: ...to Act for us concerning our claims of lands that we have Emproved in the year 1783 and 1784 and Eighty five...

thus implying they were in (what would become) the Illinois Territory in the years 1783-1785.

Joseph Standlee did prevail in his claims for land in the area of what would become Cairo, Illinois. The relationship, if any, to the above Standlee family is the subject of on-going research. Joseph Standlee is mentioned in the book on the history of the city of Cairo, IL (see sources) . In providing context to the settlements occurring just after 1780 the author of that book notes the context of the historical times, of that location, at the convergence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Here follows two paragraphs from that source:

It will be observed that General Clark desired to establish the fort here at the point, but the low ground and the frequent inundations forbade it. It will also be noticed that he speaks of maintaining an armed boat at the point. At that time the whole country west of the Mississippi was owned by Spain. Our Revolutionary War was then going on; and it was not expected that the Spanish government would be very friendly to the cause of the colonies, and hence Clark's desire to keep his eye on the Spanish territory lying just across the river.

In the letter of Clark to Martin of Sept. 30, 1779, Clark suggests the granting of forty or fifty thousand acres of land to persons who would come and settle in the vicinity of the fort; and Todd in his letter to Jefferson of June 2, 1780, says: "I therefore granted to a certain number of families 400 acres, to each family, at a price to be settled by the general assembly." These two letters throw considerable light upon the origin of such land claims as those of the Flannerys, the McElmurrays, and of Standlee in this county of ours.

In 1813 it was determined that Abraham Standlee was also entitled to land as an Early Illinois Settler (see source note). To quote in part:

"The commissioners (Michael Jones, John Caldwell, Thomas Sloo) afterward (Kaskaskia, Jan. 4, 1813) reported another list of those who were, in their opinion, entitled to four hundred acres each under the act of March 3, 1791, as settlers prior to 1788 (page 189 of same volume). Of these the following appear to be Americans:" The list includes the name: Abraham Stanley ---

Here is another legal record establishing John Standlee as a resident of Logan County, Kentucky:

Source: Abstract of Logan County Deed book:Page 435 Power of Attorney 16 Jan 1806 DAVID STANDLEE appoints WILLIAM STANDLEE (relationship not stated) as his atty to transfer any deed, note, etc for me, on 600 acres entered in my name and being on Sandy creek, the second fork called the Natchez district. Wit: WM FORSYTHE, WM MCMAKINS, JOHN STANDLEE.

Returning to the writings of Russell White Benedict, in the year 1807 Rebecca Standlee marries Richard Benedict in Shawneetown Kentucky (Russell is their son). Note Rebecca is referred to as 'oldest daughter' of John and Sarah. 1808/1809 is the approximate year Rebecca and family move to New Madrid, Missouri (Missouri Territory at that time) where their son Russell White Benedict is born.

(Though Benedict refers to Shawneetown as being in Kentucky, this may be a reference to an Illinois town that was just over the Kentucky-Illinois border)

To give events described by Russell White Benedict context, the following paragraph is from Wikipedia.

The 1811–12 New Madrid earthquakes were an intense intraplate earthquake series beginning with an initial earthquake of moment magnitude 7.5‑7.9 on December 16, 1811 followed by a moment magnitude 7.4 aftershock on the same day. They remain the most powerful earthquakes to hit the contiguous United States east of the Rocky Mountains in recorded history. They, as well as the seismic zone of their occurrence, were named for the Mississippi River town of New Madrid, then part of the Louisiana Territory, now within Missouri.

Russell writes that his family is devastated by the New Madrid Quake. By 1811 Rebecca's father John Standlee is a resident of Platton Creek, Missouri, the Richard Benedict family finds refuge with his father in law. This series of events prompts Richard, and three of Rebecca's brothers, sons of John Standlee, to explore the wilderness of Arkansas and establish a settlement on the land that John Standlee had explored decades earlier. Leaving Platton Creek, Missouri in the fall of 1811, Richard Benedict, John Standlee, David Standlee, and William Standlee go to Arkansas and establish a settlement near Cadron Creek.

Children of John Standlee and Sarah, as mentioned within the above referenced article include

Mary Ann Standlee (Mrs. Peel) Rebecca Standlee John Standlee Jr David Standlee William Standlee Green Standlee

His will adds a daughter Hannah to this list.

It was in the year 1813 Benedict and others return to Missouri. Per the writings of John's grandson, the residence of John Standlee in that year is further described as Platton Rock, one mile below Herculanium. It is later that year that John Standlee establishes residence at Cadron Creek, per the writings of his grandson.

That John Standlee and family did move to Arkansas County, Missouri Territory is evidenced by tax listings of this area. The 1816 listing, shown below in sources, included "Stanley, John".

Per Arkansas Territorial Records, in 1818 William and John Standlee (Jr) establish a sawmill and gristmill.

In 1818 Benedict and family set out to join Rebecca's father and others in Arkansas. They traveled with Andersen and Frazier. Frazier died during the journey and was buried near Cadron Creek.

In 1820 John Standlee dies in Conway County Arkansas, near Palarm Creek, per his grandson.

This is evidenced by his will, an absract of which contains the following:

STANDLEE, John, 1821, Pulaski County; page 4 Wife Sarah; sons John, William, Green; dtr. Hanah. Div. "amongust all of my children." Witnesses, Edmund Hogan, James Blackburn, William Flanikin. Recorded 1821, Book No.1, p. 29, Pulaski County, Ark. Recorded 1827, Conway County, Ark.

Common Associates of John Standlee and Onecypheros Standlee

June 2012

The following is analysis from email correspondence with Judy Millum, descendant of Onecypheros Standlee through his daughter Elizabeth, who married Isaac Boren. This exchange was with Sue Abruscato, another researcher of the Standlee/Standley line per her husband, a descendant of Catherine Standley, sister of John Standley/Standlee of Cadron.

Susan, Thanks for this information. Here is something that I found interesting after reading your note. You mentioned a Harden [Hardin] who married a Peel. Russell Benedict identified the ferry run by the Hardens as being on the White River at Batesville, Independence County, Arkansas. Following a tip on a family tree on ancestry.com, which stated that John and Sarah Standlee had a daughter named Mary Ann, who married James East Peel, I did quite a bit of research on the Peel family. In the days of John Standlee, Sr. and Sarah, and later in the 1800's, the Peel family were settling in Independence County near what became the town of Batesville. Some were settling in central Arkansas near the Standlees. Eventually, a cousin of James East Peel, James [or John] West Peel,---( I can't remember whether James or John, without looking back at my records) settled in Carroll County. His son Samuel West Peel studied law and eventually served in the U. S. Congress. He had moved to Benton County , Arkansas. Samuel West Peel served as an Indian agent, also. In his last years, he served as a lawyer advocating for Indian rights and representing native Americans. His cousin Samuel East Peel, son of James East Peel and Mary Ann Standlee moved with his father and stepmother to Kauffman, Texas, and lived there during his adult life. I have census and land records to track the Peel family on my profile pages for them on ancestry.com. Also, there were newspaper articles and articles in books that give information. The idea that the Harden family might be connected to the Peel family and that the Benedicts and Standlees knew these Hardens who settled in Independence County supports the theory that one reason for some of the Peels to move to Carroll County was because of their friendship or family relationship by marriage to the family of Onicypherous. One of the first things that led me to believe that John of Cadron and Onicypherous, who settled in Carroll County, were related was locating Peels in both places also.

Additonal Information and Sourcing from Judy per the above -----

Russell Benedict, grandson of John of Cadron, wrote that when he and his parents, John and Rebecca Benedict, arrived at the White River, on their trip from Platton Rock in Missouri to central Arkansas, they were met by Joab Hardin, who was operating a ferry across White River. They knew Joab from Kentucky. Joab's daughter Johanna (named after her mother) was a daughter of Thomas Peel. John and Sarah Standlee's daughter Mary Ann married Thomas Peel's son, James East Peel.

- See "History of Batesville" attached to Joab Hardin.

Date This Item Originally Saved: 16 MAY 2013

1816 Arkansas County, Missouri Territory Tax List

1816 Territory Tax List Arkansas County, Missouri Territory Note: Notes From Karen Allman: The Louisiana Purchase took place in 1803 , including the Territory of Arkansas. Arkansas became a state in 1819 . From the writings of Russell W. Benedict, (son of John C. Benedict, G randson of John Standlee) in "Story of An Early Settlement in Central Ar kansas" it is stated that John Standlee left his home in Missouri in 1814 to make his home in Arkansas, where he died in 1820. (See other source notes for additional details.) Based on the above, and the names in the tax list below coinciding with names in the above account, I believe the following tax record includes our John Standlee as "John Stanley." http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~arjeffer/1816_arkansas_territory_tax_l ist.htm

EARLY SETTLERS IN LITTLE ROCK.

In 1763 John B. Imbau settled at Little Rock and in the same year Joseph Bartholomew located about forty miles above the Post. In 1801 Leon Perry was on Kaufman's bayou and C. Kepler on the west side of the Big Prairie. Dating back into the eighteenth century were the settlements of Francis de Vaugine, Petro Pertuis, Joseph Trudeau and F. Imbau on the Arkansas river.

Above Cadron at Casatete (Cassitot) lived Benjamin Stan- ley from 1777 to 1780, and John and William Stanley from 1779 to 1782. The Stanleys failed to have their claims confirmed for lack of a ten years' settlement, but they antedated all other Anglo- Americans in western Arkansas. Date Saved: 23 MAY 2011

In 1811, after the New Madrid earthquake had decimated their fortunes, John Benedict, a young New Yorker, and his three brothers-in-law traveled by land from south- eastern Missouri into the Arkansas backwoods, where they settled on the Little Red River in what is now Cleburne County. Subsisting on the plentiful game of the area, the four men cleared thirty acres and built three small cabins. Two and a half years later Benedict's father in law John Standlee brought his family, slaves, and livestock to join them. The last of the Standlees left the area in 1821, and a few years later John Lindsey Lafferty, son of the original Ozark pioneer purchased part of the Standlee land. Lafferty, like Jehoida Jeffery and Jacob Wolf before him, parlayed his pioneer status into political power, helping to organize the new county of Van Buren in 1833 and serving intermittently as county judge and state legislator over the following thirty years.
