Biography

1757 - Thomas Stanbridge was born on the 8th of October 1757 in Ardingly, Sussex, England. He was the son of Mary and Walter Stanbridge. He was baptised on the 28th of October that year. ^[1]

1780 - On the 6th of February 1780, his son Thomas Stanbridge was baptised in West Hoathly (about 3 miles from Ardingly.) ^[2]

About a month later, on the 3rd of March, Thomas (senior) married the baby's mother, Jane Weston, at St. Margaret's Church, North Lane, in West Hoathly.^[3][4]

On the 10th of June that year, his father drew up a will in which Thomas was mentioned: "Walter Stanbridge of West Hoathley, Sx Yeoman 10th June 1780. . .To my sons Thomas Stanbridge [etc.]. . .If she remarries my wife shall receive 200 pounds. After this one quarter to my son Thomas Stanbridge. . ." ^[5]

1781 - On the 28th of October 1781, Thomas and Jane's son Walter Stanbridge was baptised in Ardingly. ^[6]

1782 - Thomas's father died (age 49) and was buried on the 14th of March 1782 at St. Peter's in West Hoathly. ^[7][8]

1798 - In a UK Land Tax Redemption register, Thomas was listed as occupier of a farm named "Gravely" that was owned by R. Maplethorp, in Lindfield (about 3 miles from West Hoathly.)^[9]

1811 - Thomas died at the age of 53 and was buried at All Saints, Lindfield on the 16th of August 1811.^[10] The burial record notes that he was a "yeoman at Walstead."
