Biography

Born at Toronto in Aug 1927, Barbara grew up in Toronto's Riverdale neighbourhood with her older siblings Mary and Austin. Her father's home and medical office on Broadview Ave. overlooked the Don River valley, in the days before the Don Valley Parkway [1] appeared on the scene, marred the scenery.

Barbara attended St. Joseph's College School and Riverdale Collegiate. In 1950 she was granted a Diploma in Occupational Therapy from the University of Toronto. Barbara married Harvey L. Manning in 1952 and raised her family at their home in the Willowdale and later Rexdale neighbourhoods of suburban Toronto.

Left a widow in late 1963, Barbara was able to support her five children working as an occupational therapist, employed at the Workmen's Compensation Board rehab centre in Downsview.

Barbara passed on Wolfe Island, Ontario at the age of 92 and was buried there in the Sacred Heart Cemetery. She was among the fourth generation in her Staley family to be buried on Wolfe Island.
