Michael was born June 12, 1848 in Indiana, Pennsylvania. He had a twin sister, Elizabeth Stadtmiler, who died shortly before her 17th birthday.
He married Barbara Oligher on in May 1872 in Indiana, Pennsylvania. They lived in Johnstown for a short time, and in the spring of 1875 moved to California, taking their two small girls, Emma and Alice, with them. They subsequently had at least eight other children.
Early records indicate that he may well have traveled to California aboard an “immigrant train” that offered special rates to farmers from the east. The railroads were attempting to stimulate future agricultural transportation as well as future passenger service. Railroads even offered special deals to farmers in the purchase of and along their right-of-ways.
Michael’s sister and brother-in-law (Bennett Rising) apparently took advantage of this deal also. This service lasted several years after the railroads completed their transcontinental connection. REF: Dixon, 1997, p.143.
According to the Precinct Register for Woodinville (1898), Michael was a farmer. He was 6 feet 2 inches tall, of medium complexion, with brown eyes and gray hair.
It was reported that Michael Stadtmiller was the owner of the second horse- or mule-drawn mechanical harvester in the San Joaquin Valley.REF: Dixon, 1997, p.143.
He passed away on October 10, 1899 in Tulare, California. He is buried, with his wife, in the Tulare Cemetery, Grave Lot Number 12, Section 4, Location 11-1. REF: Dixon, 1997, p.143.
