Amelia Martha Matilda Crook Spurling was born about 1840 at New South Wales, Australia, almost certainly in Sydney. She was the youngest daughter of William Spurling and Amelia Laurie.
Amelia married widower and Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross recipient, John Paton VC, a prison warder, in 1870 at Sydney, New South Wales.[1][2] Amelia travelled with John to his gaols at Port Macquarie (to 1875), Deniliquin (1875-88), Berrima (1888-90) and Goulburn (1890-96). Whilst at Deniliquin she worked as matron of the gaol hospital.
In 1896 they retired to Sydney where they lived in a cottage (no longer standing) near the corner of Prospect Road and Robert Street, Verona, 19 Prospect Road, Summer Hill, in Sydney's inner western suburbs. They worshipped at St Andrew's Church of England (Anglican Church) on the corner of Henson and Smith Streets, Summer Hill.
Amelia, outliving John by nine years, passed away in 1923 at her home at Summer Hill. She was buried with John in the Rookwood General Cemetery, New South Wales. [3][4] She was survived by her two devoted step-daughters.
