Biography

Margaret Spring (married name Triffitt) was born around 1841 in County Meath, Ireland,^[1][2] the daughter of Margaret Spring and John Spring.^[3]

She married Richard James Triffitt on 13 October 1858 at St. Mary of the Angels, Geelong, Victoria, Australia.^[3][4] Their children were:

In January 1878, Margaret's husband Richard posted a notice in The Daily Northern Argus cautioning storekeepers, licensed victuallers and others against extending her credit, stating "I will not, after this notice, be responsible for any Debts she may incur."^[10]

In 1905 she was named in divorce proceedings between Ethel Mary Beart and Ethel's husband Arthur Henry Beart.^[11] Ethel claimed Margaret had "misbehaved" with her husband.^[11] Apparently, Margaret was known as a "drunken, immoral woman".^[11]

Margaret died on 8 October 1913 at Ripple Vale, near Westwood, Queensland, Australia, aged 72 years.^[2][12]

Research notes

While Margaret's Queensland death record include parents' names "Laurence Spring" and "Margaret Millard",^[12] these are thought incorrect because Margaret's marriage record notes parents were Margaret Flynn and John Spring.^[3] This matches with a MyHeritage site, which states that Margaret is the sister of Michael Spring, and the daughter of Margaret and John.^[13]

Mandy's research indicates one of Mararet's sons was named 'Laurence Spring Triffitt', and he married a woman named Margaret Millard.^[1] Laurence Spring and Margaret Millard were named as parents on Margaret's Queensland death record.^[12] Perhaps the death record accidentally names her son and his wife as Margaret's parents?
