Mark Spitz is best known as an American former swimmer, nine-time Olympic champion, and former world record holder. In 1972 Spitz set new world records in all seven events in which he competed, a record that still stands.
Spitz was born in Modesto, California, the first of three children of Arnold and Lenore (Smith) Spitz. His family is Jewish, the grandparents left Hungary after World War II.
When Spitz returned from the Olympics, he began dating Suzy Weiner, a UCLA theater student and part-time model, who also was the daughter of one of his father's business acquaintances. Less than a year after the Munich Olympics, they were married on May 6, 1973, in a traditional Jewish service at the Beverly Hills Hotel. They have two sons, one of whom swam at Stanford University.
