John was baptised December 4, 1881 in Barnton, Cheshire, England. He was the son of John Spillman and Ann Haddock.[1]
In the summer of 1908, John married Elizabeth Houghton at Christ Church in Barnton, Cheshire.[2]
In the spring of 1913, John and Elizabeth emigrated to North America, arriving in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada on May 23rd. They crossed the border to the USA stating that it was their intent to reside there permanently. He was 31 years of age and listed as an oiler and his wife Elizabeth was 28 and their destination was listed as Wyandotte, Michigan where his uncle, Joseph Cashmore lived. John gave his nearest relative in his homeland as his uncle, Thomas Farrimond of Winnington, Cheshire.
He had been a soccer player and had worked for the Michigan Alkali Works for nearly 2 years. He had been in hospital for a few months due to an attack of typhoid fever and had sold his home and sailed for England for a "long rest," [3]
John Bowen Spillman and his wife were travelling 2nd Class and both lost their lives in the sinking of the Lusitania on May 7, 1915. His wife's body was lost at sea while Mr. Spillman's body was recovered and identified (No. 26) and he was buried at Queenstown on May 15th; Grave B, 5th Row, Upper Tier. [4] [5]
