Biography

Daniel was born in 1804. He passed away in 1881.

An excerpt from his grandson's obit from the "Minute Man" Sons of the American Revolution (Chicago, January 1921)

Mr. Spencer's grandfather, Daniel Reed Spencer was born November 14, 1804, in Bennington, Vermont. In 1827-8 he served as a volunteer in the Mexican War for Independence, on board the Man of War "Bravo" preying on Spanish merchant vessels. He died May 19, 1881, in Washington County, Illinois.

(From online) Spencer Cemetery is located west of Du Bois in Section 30-40A in Washington County, Plat No. 26 (1846).

This section of ground is currently owned by Eugene and Jeanette Pedtke.

Grave sites that were found included : Daniel R. Spencer, born November 11, 1801; died May 19, 1881.

His wife, Lavina Spencer, born October 12, 1811; died July 27, 1880. Inscription on the tombstone : "Our father and Mother are gone. They lie beneath the sod. Dear parents, though we miss you much, we know you rest with God." A small stone nearby has the initials CWS. Nancy Phillips, wife of D. R. S. Burns, born July 12, 1844; died August 12, 1871. A small stone, probably for a child was not readable. Ella L. Spencer, born December 25, 1859; died August 20, 1880.

E. Hycinthia, wife of R. H. Spencer, born March 6, 1856; died May 31, 1877.; married March 12, 1876. Ross H. Spencer, wife was Mary Scrounce; children were Noble, Ocela, Hattie, Cliffie, Lincoln and Summer.
