Virginia was born in 1929. She passed away in 2012.

Virginia Spencer Carr was formerly the John B. and Elena Dìaz-Versòn Chair of English Letters at Georgia State University. Her other works include the Paul Bowles: A Life, Understanding Carson McCullers, (South Carolina, 1991), and The Lonely Hunter: A Biography of Carson McCullers, (Doubleday, 1975), winner of the Francis Butler Simkins Prize of the Southern Historical Society and Longwood College. In 2004, Carr lived in Atlanta, Georgia.

Obituary EXCERPT

Dr. Carr was born in West Palm Beach, Fla, to Wilma Bell Spencer and Louis Perry Spencer. She received her BA degree from FSU; her master's from UNC-Chapel Hill, and her PhD also from Florida State University. Dr. Carr wrote extensive biographies of Georgia-born writer Carson McCullers, John Dos Passos, and Paul Bowles.

Carr was a professor for many years at Columbus College in Columbus, Ga., and later professor as well as English Dept. Chair at Georgia State University. She retired in 2003 and moved to Lynn, Massachusetts. Dr. Carr was survived by 3 daughters, 7 grandchildren, and LIVING, whom she married in 2006.
