Biography

William Speirs was born in 1830 in Scotland (as listed on all London census records. He was the son of James Speirs Who was 44. Still researching his mother, it is possible that his father had remarried after William’s older siblings were born.

William had at least one younger brother, David - likely by the same mother.

I have been unable to locate census records for William (who would have been 10 or 11 at the time) or his parents in 1841 or beyond and in 1841 his younger brother David is living with his older sister now married. It is possible that he lost his mother when he was a child.

In the 1861 London Census record, William is recorded as being a mariner, brother to James Grant Sanford Jack Speirs who is listed as head of the house. William remained living near and working on the Thames. Even well after his older brother James GSJ Speirs passed away, census records showed William residing (with his wife) in the same street in Limehouse, London as his brother’s in-laws.

William Speirs married Anne Nee Barnes. Maquarie on 5 August 1868 when he was 38 years old.

He died in September 1907 in London, London, having lived a long life of 77 years, and was buried there.
