Horatio Gates Spafford was born on 20th October 1828 at Troy, Rensselaer County, New York, United States of America. He was the son of Horatio Spafford and Hannah Bristol.
Hymn Writer, Religious Figure. He was a successful businessman in Chicago, Illinois in the late 1800s who lost a great deal of real estate in the Chicago Fire. He penned the famous hymn "It Is Well" after receiving word of the death of his four daughters in an accident at sea on November 22, 1873. Eventually having two more daughters, his family moved to Jerusalem, Israel and established "The American Colony", which was dedicated to helping the poor. "The American Colony" still exists today. On 16th October 1888, just four days short of his 60th birthday, Spafford succumbed to malaria. He is buried in Jerusalem.
