US Civil War: War Between the States Project

Introduction

West Virginia was a divided state, where there were combatants for both sides of the conflict, and West Virginia was actually created out of the State of Virginia as a result of the majority of its inhabitants supporting the USA government. This part of the state of Virginia was actually separated by the Appalachian Mountain Range, and many of the inhabitants here did not live the planter's life, but were independent farmers without slave ownership. The key word is many, not all, so this was a divided area where many brothers fought against their brothers, literally. For more information see: West Virginia Statehood West Virginia Archives.

As a result of this division, attempts will be made to supply both USA and CSA sources.

Medals

In 1866 the West Virginia legislature awarded over 26,000 medals to Union Soldiers. There were three classes of medals:

  • Class I - "Honorably Discharged"
  • Class II - "Killed In Battle"
  • Class III - "For Liberty" (Died of Illness or Wounds)

The West Virginia Archive still has unclaimed medals, and if you can prove descent from the person awarded, you may claim their medal. See the link below: West Virginia Unclaimed Medals
