Introduction

Project Maintenance Categories group profiles in need of some particular type of work, and serve as to-do lists for Projects. Such a profile therefore "needs" work.

The US Southern Colonies Project has defined project-specific maintenance categories to organize the work of team members and others interested in improving the profiles of US Southern Colonists.

These maintenance categories are implemented through "modifiers" or directly with categories:

Sections 2 and 3 describe the project maintenance categories in detail.

Section 4 presents the steps and syntax to categorize a profile into one or more of the project maintenance categories.

Section 5 provides a recommended approach to then document the needed work in the Research Notes section of the profile.

Project Maintenance "Needs" Categories

See US Southern Colonies Project Maintenance Categories for the most up-to-date list of project maintenance categories.

Needs Biography

Criteria: Profiles in this category need a biography, or have biographies that do not meet WikiTree biography recommendations and best practices.

Example Syntax:

Notes: none.

Companion Page: none.

Needs Extensive Work

Criteria: Profiles in this category need extensive work, defined as needing to be placed in more than three (3) of the US Southern Colonies Project Maintenance "Needs" Categories.

Example Syntax:

Notes: none.

Companion Page: none.

See also: none.

Needs Location Research

Criteria: Profiles in this category need to be reviewed to verify locations in the data fields and text existed at the time the person was living, are consistent with the family's known locations, and use the naming conventions of their time instead of ours.

Example Syntax:

Notes: Links to formation maps can be found on the companion space page.

See also: Help:Location Fields.

Needs Merge Attention

Criteria: Profiles in this category need attention as a result of merge activity, most commonly post-merge cleanup.

This category may also be used to:

  • ensure a profile in a proposed merge doesn't fall off the radar—sometimes profile managers approve the merge, but don't complete it; other times orphaned merges receive default approval, but no one reviews the merge;
  • flag a profile that has had a proposed merge rejected or postponed;
  • flag a profile you set in an unmerged match—in which case you should also add the profile to Needs Research.

Example Syntax:

Notes: none.

Companion Page: none.

See also: Help:Merging.

Needs Project Attention

Criteria: Profiles in this category need project attention primarily because the profile has an error related to the project account or project box.

Example Syntax:

Notes: These usually require resolution by someone with the Project Team Leader badge or the Profile Manager.

Companion Page: none.

Needs Ref Tags

Criteria: Profiles in this category have both biographies and sources, but do not contain in-line citations (i.e. ref tags, ), making it difficult to determine the source of facts in the profile.

Example Syntax:

Notes: none.

Companion Page: none.

See also: References and Ref Tag Suggestons.

Needs Relationship Review

Criteria: Profiles in this category need to reviewed to ensure the relationships (attached profiles) are supported by the biographical information and sources.

Example Syntax:

Notes: none.

Companion Page: none.

See also: none.

Needs Research

Criteria: Profiles in this category need additional research.

Example Syntax:

Notes: none.

Companion Page: none.

See also: none.

Needs Sources

Criteria: Profiles in this category need to be updated to include sources for one or more pieces of information in the profile.

Example Syntax:

Notes: Use the Unsourced Profiles category if the profile has no sources.

Companion Page: none.

See also: Help:Sources, US Southern Colonies Sources and Resources Directory.

Needs Style Review

Criteria: Profiles in this category need to be updated to meet current WikiTree and US Southern Colonies Project style guidelines.

Example Syntax:

Notes: none.

Companion Page: none.

Add or Remove a Project Maintenance Category

Add or Remove a Project Maintenance "Needs" Category

This section presents the steps to properly categorize a profile into a project maintenance "needs" category.

To add a Project profile to the category, do the following:

  1. Add the category by one of these two (2) methods:

    • project box with colony parameter and up to three (3) needs parameters

Notes: Insert project box below any other categories, and above the Biography header. Only project-managed profiles use the project box.

    • project sticker with colony parameter and up to three (3) needs parameters

Notes: Insert project sticker below the Biography heading.

  2. Document the "needs" in the Research Notes as described in the Documenting "Needs" in Research Notes section below.

To remove a Project profile from the category, do the following:

  1. Resolve the "needs".
  2. Update the "needs" issue(s) in the Research Notes section.
  3. Remove the category (by reversing add step 1 above).

Colony Values

colony is a required parameter and takes the values:

  • Virginia
  • Jamestown
  • Maryland
  • Carolina
  • North Carolina
  • South Carolina
  • Georgia

Notes: Careful! It is Jamestown and Carolina here.

Needs Values

value, value1, and value2 take the values:

  • Biography
  • Extensive Work
  • Location Research
  • Merge Attention
  • Project Attention
  • Ref Tags
  • Relationship Review
  • Research
  • Sources
  • Style Review

Add or Remove a Project Maintenance WikiTree-wide Category

This section presents the steps to properly categorize a profile into a project maintenance research note box category, or directly into a category.

Note: The Conflated Profiles template discussed below categorizes profiles into categories shared with the states of the United States Project in the cases of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. There are unique categories for Jamestown Colony and Province of Carolina.

Note: The Unsourced Profiles template discussed below categorizes profiles into categories shared with the states of the United States Project in the cases of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. There are NO categories for Jamestowne Colony and Province of Carolina.

To add a Project profile to the category, do the following:

1. Add the category using a Research Note Box with |US Southern Colonies and |colony (Conflated Profiles and Unsourced Profiles) or directly (Family Brick Wall):

ColonyConflated ProfilesFamily Brick WallsUnsourced Profiles
MarylandUS Southern ColoniesUS Southern Colonies
VirginiaUS Southern ColoniesUS Southern Colonies
Jamestown ColonyUS Southern ColoniesUS Southern Colonies
note no colony parameter
Province of CarolinaUS Southern ColoniesUS Southern Colonies
note no colony parameter
North CarolinaUS Southern ColoniesUS Southern Colonies
South CarolinaUS Southern ColoniesUS Southern Colonies
GeorgiaUS Southern ColoniesUS Southern Colonies
Notes: Insert below any other categories, and above the Biography header. Careful! It is Jamestown Colony and Province of Carolina here.

Documenting "Needs" in Research Notes

When you add maintenance categories to a profile, you need to also explain why in the Research Notes section. This facilitates collaboration, helping community members understand why you added the maintenance category, and defining the work that needs to be done to then remove the maintenance category.

Here is an example explanation for a profile added to less than four (4) maintenance categories:

Research Notes
Needs Biography: Self-explanatory (no text in Biography section). ~~~~
Needs Relationship Review: Two profiles attached as wife (WikiTree-ID & WikiTree-ID) appear to represent the same woman. ~~~~

A profile needing to be added to more than three (3) maintenance categories is instead added to the Needs Extensive Work category, but each individual maintenance category is still documented. In this case, an example explanation might look like:

Research Notes
Needs Extensive Work: The following maintenance categories apply:

  • Needs Biography: Self-explanatory (no text in Biography section). ~~~~
  • Needs Relationship Review: Two profiles attached as wife (WikiTree-ID & WikiTree-ID) appear to represent the same woman. ~~~~
  • Needs Research: Research into the life events and family of this person is needed. ~~~~
  • Needs Sources: Sources for birth/death/marriage dates and locations, and attached family profiles (particularly her parents) are needed. ~~~~

Notes: When you save your edits to the profile, the four tildes (~~~~) "sign" the entry with a link to your profile page and the date/time.
