This page is intended to provide a clear explanation and list of the sources that should be used when working the US Presidents Project Profiles

Due to recent theories about how all the US Presidents but one were descendants of John (Plantagenet) of England (1166-1216), which has since been proven false, we defer to our main project United States Project Reliable Sources for a broader view of sources.

Sources Specific to US Presidents

With all of these sources, if you cannot provide a link to the direct record, please make sure to add page numbers, Volumes, etc, a complete description is needed.

Pre-1700

  • Any source that fits the description per Reliable Sources Please make sure you read through the description of Unreliable Sources on the same page.

Post-1700

While we prefer Reliable Sources, the following sources are accepted by the community. There are noted errors in some of these sources, but, are a great place to start.

  • Roberts, Gary Boyd, comp.,:Ancestors of American Presidents, Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society (2009). Updates online.
Notable Kin, Volume 1, Santa Clarita, California: Carl Boyer, 3rd (1998)
The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants to the American Colonies or the United States, Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co. (2008)
  • The American Genealogist, New Haven, Connecticut: D. L. Jacobus
  • Brogan, Hugh and Charles Mosley, American Presidential Families, New York: Macmillan Publishing Company (1993)
  • Find A Grave memorials: Use with caution as many of these without headstone photos were created to support "unproven ancestries"
  • Wikipedia While a reference can be made to Wikipedia, especially for complex biographies, the sources listed should be the primary sources used on Wikipedia. If facts on Wikipedia are not substantiated by primary sources, please do not add them to WikiTree.

Do not Use

  • famouskin.com This site does provide information about primary sources that can be used. But, be aware that you need to look at the source yourself to understand what information is validated by that source.
  • Craig Hart, A Genealogy of the Wives of the American Presidents and Their First Two Generations of Descent, McFarland, Nov 1, 2014: Seldom cites primary sources, and often relies on very bad secondary ones. Almost no analysis or criticism, so it's largely just a name collection scrounged from hither and yon.
  • Genealogy Simple Full of disproven theories
  • U.S. Presidents Genealogies @ JRaC While much of the data is correct, there are many errors, also.
