How to use WikiTree to Manage Your Sources

Sources are huge. They are the go-to information for proving your facts. Anyone who does genealogy knows how great it is to hunt down the source to that one date that was so hard to prove. Well once you do find the source you want to add it to all the profiles that fact applies to.

The Basics

As you create a profile, you add names, birth date, death date, marriage date and biographical information. Below the Biographical information you add a source.

Repeated use of a source

Using a Footnote

Here's how to use the same source citation multiple times.

The first time you use it, include a "name" inside the ref tag, like this:

<ref name="birth certificate">Birth Certificate of George Russell Beebe, Registration 398-5554-428 (1920), Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services - Bureau of Vital Records, Personal copy in the files of [[Beebe-655|Barbara Beebe]]</ref>

In all following references you can just use this:

<ref name="birth certificate" />

Done this way, all subsequent footnotes for this same source will point to the same footnote at the bottom of the page.

Using Free Space Profiles

Create a free-space profile for each source.

Menu Top right of page
ADD
NEW THING

Add the source just like you would add a profile.

Then link the profile to your NEW THING Source. To update a source, just update the one free-space profile. It is very easy to fix an error or update a new location for the source. No need to go back and edit profiles.

Here is a list of WikiTree free-space profiles for sources. You can use any of these in your profiles, or make your own.

Great G2G discussion on using free space pages for sources with html tags

Using The Free Space Profile As A Template

Using as an example The Carr Family Records, you could add to that page something like:

<includeonly>[[Space:The_Carr_Family_Records|»]] Carr, Edson Irving. ''The Carr Family Records: embracing the record of the first families who settled in America and their descendants, with many branches who came to this country at a later date.'' (Rockton, IL: Herald Printing House, 1894) [[https://archive.org/details/carrfamilyrecord00carr Archive.org]]</includeonly>

When you wanted to cite this source, instead of copying and pasting the citation you could just put {{Space:The_Carr_Family_Records}} into the profile which might be easier to work with.

Unsourced Profile

If you have a profile or come across a profile with no sources, you can add the profile to the appropriate Unsourced Profiles Category. The Unsourced Profiles Category is broken down into geographical sub-categories. You can determine the correct sub-category by reviewing The Unsourced Profiles Categories Page.

You will find help for adding categories to your profiles on The Using Categories Help Page.

Mags, FYI, I removed the Sources category. I trimmed a lot of pages from there while working up the new instructions and considering the issues that led to this G2G post. You have some good points here and there is more to be said, but we need to settle on what is and is not officially recommended.

I don't want to muddy up the flow here with silly questions, but currently lacking documents, I am at a loss as to how to cite MYSELF when fleshing out my immediate family. I've used various types of citation before, but the options here only show second-hand citing, not first-hand. I understand that, since most of my knowledge of my father comes from my mother, I would cite her. Just how we know what gets a little stickier the closer to home.

Can we add some text here about what to add to profiles that are unsourced, or additional sources. I believe there are categories, but I am having trouble finding them.

Ah! Found this link http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Unsourced_Profiles

To add this to a profile add the text into a category box. See help categories - http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Categories
