See also Smiths of Colonial Virginia. These pages were created to aid in research of the evidence concerning Lawrence Smith: the Lawrence baptized in Lancashire in 1629 is believed to be the same Lawrence who first appears in Colonial Virginia records in the list of headrights redeemed by Augustine Warner in 1652. The mother of Lawrence (baptized 1629 in Lancashire) is believed to be Elizabeth Towneley, sister-in-law of Augustine Warner (who married Mary Towneley).

The association of the "Smiths of Totnes in Devon" with Maj. Lawrence Smith's family was first uttered by Sir Bernard Burke in his peerage books. He was mistaken. The major graphical elements are similar between the two families coats of arms, but they clearly distinctly different. One uses acorns, the other barnacles. Maj. Lawrence Smith's family was part of the Honor of Clitheroe. They lived in Stone Edge and Colne in Briercliffe Upon Hill cum Extwistle and have no associations to the families that owned Stonyhurst Hall. How do I know all of this? Go find an online copy of The Lancashire Witch Conspiracy.
