Welcome to the Geographical Team

The Geographical Team is part of the Scotland Project

Project Coordinator: Bobbie Hall
Leader Contact: Sheena Tait
Regional Team Leaders:

Pending County Team Members: These members have joined the project but have not selected a County Team.

County Categories: Scottish Counties

Goals

The goal of the Geographical Team is to organise ourselves into groups that will focus on profiles of people born in a particular region of Scotland These regions are then divided into individual county teams. Ultimately we want to see an increase in profiles from that county, and to see the standard of those profiles rise. We do this through maintenance categories, one place studies, notable profiles and sub-projects, and are always open to new ideas. Please contact the team leader if you would like to join the Scotland Project and one of these teams.

Just FYI. hundreds or more records on Family Search that should be transcribed as Garvald Parish, East Lothian are transcribed as Garvald, Dumfriesshire, Scotland

example: "Scotland Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950", database, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XBP7-GXL : 16 September 2021), James Steel in entry for Mary Steel, 1757.

There are some sources that state Garvald was a former parish of Kirkmichael, which is part of Dumfriesshire - Saints in Scottish Place-Names - https://saintsplaces.gla.ac.uk/place.php?id=357

Scotlands Places states Garvald and Bara Parish was a parish in East Lothian until 1975. - https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/search/results?st=Garvald

Gazetteer for Scotland states Garvald was a village of East Lothian - https://www.scottish-places.info/towns/townfirst2746.html

I have sent updates to Family Search to try to get the Dumfriesshire removed from our Dropdown list, etc, sending them the Scotlands Places link above, as well as their own Family Search page link.

This is kind of a broad request, as I have no idea in which region this placename is supposed to be. I have a census whereon the person's place of birth is rendered as "Cathoder Navier Scotland (Ref)" on familysearch, and as "Catherder Navin" on ancestry.

Can anyone interpret just where this place is supposed to be?

Mel,

Can you give me the link on FamilySearch? I'll see if I can figure it out.

Hi. Although I’m an American citizen, I was born in Aberdeen and have done a fair amount of research on my Scottish maternal grandparents as well as my paternal ancestors, several of whom came from Aberdeenshire. How can I help?

Dave, just knowing North Uist was a part of Inverness- Shire gives me New direction! Thank you, I appreciate all help!
My ancestors originated in North Uist, Scotland. Surnames Lamont Lamond and Mc Cuish, Morrison and Cameron, what area is North Uist considered to be in?
Hi Bonnee,

I'm sorry to say that the Western Isles are not a strong area of knowledge with me, however I believe that North Uist is in the Highland Region. They were a designated part of Inverness-shire before the latest administration area change in 1975.
