Samuel Fuqua rushed to the quarterdeck of the USS Arizona. A bomb fell nearby, knocking him down. As senior commanding officer, Samuel had a cigar stub firmly in his mouth and led efforts to save surviving seamen. The Medal of Honor was awarded to him..[1]

World War I- Franklin Van Valkenburgh served in several posts including instructor at the Naval Academy. Franklin Van Valkenburgh was commissioned Commander in 1927 and promoted to the rank of captain in 1937. When the commanding officer of the USS Arizona , Captain Harold C. Train, was appointed Chief of Staff to Vice Admiral William S. Pye in February 1941, Captain Franklin Van Valkenburgh was named the new captain of the Arizona. He rushed to the bridge to of the USS Arizona, however it blew up and sank. The USS Arizona was with the Battleship Division 1 in the capacity of Flagship and was a part of the Pacific Fleet stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.[2]

World War I veteran, Chief Watertender, Peter Tomich ordered his men to abandon ship, when the USS Utah was hit by 2 torpedo strikes. The ship was listing on one side. Tomich was securing the boilers to prevent an explosion. USS Utah rolled over and sank with Tomich still on board. He was awarded Medal of Honor, posthumously.[1]
