Only five percent of the Yarmouth Vital Records have previously appeared in print. In preparing these two volumes, we transcribed the records from microfilm, comparing our first 43 pages with George E. Bowman's transcriptions in the Mayflower Descendant. The Yarmouth town books were destroyed in a fire about 1674. Records of only a few events prior to that date appear in the earliest book, book 3. Records from all town books containing vital records prior to 1850 were copied: books 3, 4, 7, 8, 18, 20, 21 and Register volume 1.

Joe, thanks for continuing to update this. If I have additions, would you like me to comment or would it be better for me to just add it to the page?

I analyzed all the MAVR links that Ales exported and then compared what was available in either archive.org & AmericanAncestors and there were just three not covered:

Either way Marina. I don't mind adding corrections or additions you find. Most people get confused with the formatting to keep the look consistent, but if you feel confident - go for it. I will add the three new towns as the table will need some adjusting.

I've added the above links and updated the table.

I just checked, and it looks like all of the American Ancestors links are available without a subscription (I was able to access them while logged out). This was true for even the recently published volumes, such as Northampton.

That's great. I will slowly add in the links.

Thank you.

AmericanAncestors (by subscription) has digitized Vital Records of Plymouth, Massachusetts, to the year 1850.

Lee D. van Antwerp, Ruth Wilder Sherman, ed., Vital Records of Plymouth, Massachusetts, to the year 1850 (Camden, ME: Picton Press, 1993).

The records are accessible via the more or less statewide database, "Massachusetts: Vital Records, 1620-1850," which subscribers can choose to browse by volume and page.

Hope this helps.--Gene

I don't find any evidence that the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has townships. The commonwealth has counties and towns (yes a few are advanced from towns to cities) Based on the form of government, there are 294 towns and 57 cities in Massachusetts.

Should we change the word- townships - to Towns and also include links to towns which have VRs produced after 1850 such as Dennis. Roberta Gilbert Bratti, Natalie Hardacker Ross and Pauline Wixon Derick, eds., Dennis, Massachusetts Vital Records 1793-1900, 3 Volumes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Township_(United_States)#:~:text=States%20using%20a%20township%20form%20include%20the%20following%3A,where%20they%20are%20sometimes%20referred%20to%20as%20precincts.

I think its' a matter of defining what the use case, or purpose, of this page, is.

Mass. Vital Records Project is usually the first stop I make when I am researching. When it comes time to source a profile, that is when one wants to include as close to a primary as one can.

This page could serve both purposes, although I go directly to Mass. Vital Records Project because I know about it, but I can see the value in including a link as part of each town description, and/or at the top, but not in the source examples, if that is what they are meant to be. If they were, I'd need to switch to edit view, find the entry, and then copy that.

What I usually do, when the time comes, is navigate to Sources Massachusetts, search for the town, and then navigate to, e.g. Brewster and use the examples there, which are formatted for easy copy/paste.

Dana,

The purpose of this page was to create a place for me to have a place to go to in order to rapidly find the vital record volume that I was looking for and also to provide a properly formatted citation in a form which I like. I certainly don't mind and am pleased when anyone else uses it. Obviously I only got half way through, and need to return to finish the page eventually.

I personally hate the Mass. Vital Records Project and I hate when I see it as a source. They are plagiarizing and not giving proper credit to the underlying source. I think most users of the site have no idea they are exact copies of the books given above. Citing MVRP is often very incomplete and confusing so that you really have no idea where the information came from. It also puts one more layer between the WikiTree citation and the actual source of the information. Also, a website should never be cited in place of the actual book as all urls eventually break or change. I guess you are right that this page is a complete replacement for the MVRP and puts you closer to the actual source. This page should be quicker than going to MVRP, and give you a better citation to the actual source.

I am also not a fan of WikiTree source pages. I find when the entire citation is a link that it is ugly and distracting. My links are very targeted or occur at the end of a citation. Source pages also put one more useless step between the reader and the actual source.

Joe, your foresight (and opinion) turned out to be a good thing since as you know ma-vitalrecords.org has died.

What you've got going here is a valuable replacement guide.

Joe, the lists complement each other. The Mass. Vital Records Project gives you indexed quick access to relevant pages in a town by last name. And for now, it includes a lot of towns the lists here have not completed yet. And of course, the lists here include sources the Mass. Vital Records have not indexed yet, too. They are both very valuable.
posted by Walter Howe
Walter, that project is just scanning pages and copying from the books given here. The links provided on this page are to the freely available copies.

Hi Joe,

Thank you for your work on this massive undertaking.

I also prefer to cite the books, but to this day find quick access to the various town books helpful. (Including the ability to compile research notes by flipping between the records of different towns.)

You wrote, "They are plagiarizing and not giving proper credit to the underlying source."

At least when the project was originally organized--almost 20 years ago, and as I recall--the Massachusetts vital records books (ala, the tan books) were not freely accessible and well cataloged anywhere. Folks like me volunteered to transcribe chunks of each of the books. Our transcriptions were linked, page by page, to digital images, also page by page.

If your objection is that the different transcribed entries don't auto generate a source citation, that is true. But the title page of each book is linked to each page of the digital images.

As above, I rarely cite the project materials themselves, but still today find access to the transcribed entries to be valuable. --Gene
