Are You Ready for a Challenge?

Challenges provide a great way to collaborate with each other, to make new contacts in the WikiTree community, and to engage in a little friendly competition. If you love a good challenge, check out these recent, current, and upcoming events involving Kentucky. Be sure to let us know in the comments below what you're working on!

Quick View Calendar

  • 5-6 May Pop-up Challenge: Honor the Kentucky Derby by adding, connecting or improving profiles for Horse-racing Jockeys

Current Focus Challenges

We kicked off May with our challenge focus on the Kentucky Derby Pop-up (though the weekend is over, feel free to keep working on this if it's a topic you love). For the rest of the month, we've got two challenges from partner projects we can turn our attention to:

  • The US Governors Project is running a month-long May challenge to connect profiles for these men and women. ALL of Kentucky's governors are connected, but many of our governor profiles and family trees could also use a bit of TLC (the complete list is here). If you like working on notable profiles or politicians, jump in and flesh them out!

On-going Challenges Around WikiTree

If you are already working with one of these regular challenges on WikiTree, consider focusing your work on Kentucky profiles. If you are already working on Kentucky profiles, consider plugging in to one of these challenges. There's something for everyone!

Weekly and Biweekly Challenges

  • Data Doctors Challenges cover repairing a variety of database errors and suggestions. There's a new topic every week, and there are always Kentucky profiles in need of attention.
  • Friday Date Night is a group that gets together for a quick zoom meeting every other Friday to discuss tips and tricks for finding dates on undated profiles. It's not a typical challenge, but it's just as fun.
  • Saturday Sourcing Sprints offer the opportunity to participate in a mini Source-a-Thon every Saturday. Add sources to unsourced Kentucky profiles and compete for a winner's sticker.

Current Monthly Challenges

Do you participate in another WikiTree challenge that's not listed here? Let us know so we can include it and invite more Kentucky researchers to participate with you. If you are participating in one of these, be sure to mention that you're working on Kentucky in your G2G post responses.

15 for 15 WikiTree Challenge

2023 is WikiTree's 15th anniversary year and to celebrate, we've got a year-long 15 for 15 Challenge running. It's a fantastic way to try out new aspects of WikiTree and learn new skills. If you haven't signed up yet, you can do that here. Have you thought about focusing your work on Kentucky?

We have great ideas for 15 for 15: Kentucky Project Activities!

Kentucky Project Challenges

5-6 May 2023 Kentucky Derby Pop-up This weekend we invited everyone across WikiTree to celebrate the Kentucky Derby by participating in a Pop-up Challenge to add, connect or improve profiles for horse-racing jockeys. Though we weren't tracking contributions, the Jockey category on WikiTree grew more than 15%, and many collateral profiles were added as well!

The challenge list included London, Kentucky native Roy Lee Gilbert (1938-1961), and continuing to build out his tree would be a great benefit to Harlan and Laurel Counties.

If this challenge was right on track for you, don't hesitate to continue working on it. Just remember as time goes on to be extra careful in checking for duplicates when creating new profiles. Even though the official race is over, all of these remarkable and often under appreciated atheletes are fascinating subjects for research.
