About

Eastern Cemetery is located at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Congress Street in Portland, Maine. The cemetery was established as a public burying ground in 1668 and contains over 4,000 marked graves with another 3,000 people in unmarked plots. There are twelve sections, including special areas for Quakers and Catholics.

Notable burials include commander of the USS Enterprise William Ward Burrows II and rear admiral James Alden Jr.

Eastern Cemetery is the oldest historic site in Portland. It has been maintained since 2006 by the non-profit group Spirits Alive.

Liat, there are many profiles in this cemetery that are beyond the end date of 1860. Where did that date come from?
