The county features four large lakes. The two largest of these, Lakes Mendota and Monona, outline downtown Madison. The other two, Waubesa and Kegonsa, lie just south of the city near the village of McFarland.

A colonel by the name of Ebeneezer Brigham was the first known settler in Dane County. He settled near Blue Mounds in 1828. Blue Mounds lies near the county's western border. At the time the area was known as the Four Lake Country. When Brigham arrived in Dane County the area was inhabited by Indians of the Sauk tribe

The land in and around Madison soon became known as Four Lake Country. Kegonsa was called ther first of these lakes. Then Waubesa, Monona, and Mendota followed as the second, third, and fourth lakes, respectively.

In 1836 the state legislature, meeting in Belmont, Wisconsin, chose Madison as the state capital.
