39th Regiment, New Jersey Infantry, Volunteers
The 39th Regiment was organized under the provisions of Acts of Congress, approved 1861 Jul 22, and 1864 Jul 4, as set forth in General Orders of the War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., (No. 224) 1864 Jul 6, and under authority received from the War Department for the raising of two regiments of Infantry, and promulgated in General Orders of the Office of Adjutant General, Trenton, New Jersey, (No. 4) 1864 Aug 24. The Regiment was organized under the provisions of General Orders of the War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., (No. 110) 1863 Apr 29. Instructions were issued and recruiting for the Regiment immediately commenced.
The Headquarters of the Regiment was established at Camp Frelinghuysen, Newark, New Jersey, and active measures were put forth to complete the organization at an early day. The required number of men to complete the Regiment was soon raised and mustered into the service of the United States, by companies, for one year. Soon after the commencement of this regiment, authority was issued for the raising of another regiment of Infantry, to be known as the 41st, recruiting being dull it failed of success - the men that had been enlisted for it were transferred to and joined this regiment. The Regiment was fully completed and organized by 1864 Oct 11, having a full complement of men: Officers, 39; Non-Commissioned Officers and Privates, 973; Total, 1012.
The Regiment left the State by detachments and proceeded under orders direct to the front. Arriving at City Point, Virginia, it was temporarily assigned to duty with General Benham's Brigade of Engineers, within the fortifications around Petersburg. It remained in this connection but a short time; when it was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 9th Army Corps, Army of the Potomac, to June, 1865. Duty on breastworks at City Point, Virginia, 1864 October, then moved to Poplar Grove Church.
In 1865 during the months of March and April, the strength of the Regiment was increased by the joining from Draft Rendezvous, Trenton, New Jersey, of a large number of recruits. The Regiment continued its organization and remained in active service until the close of the war, and those not entitled to discharge under the provisions of General Orders of the War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., (No. 77) 1865 Apr 28, were transferred to the 33rd Regiment, in compliance with Special Orders of the Headquarters, 9th Army Corps, (No. 45) 1865 Jun 15, and were discharged with that regiment. The remainder were mustered out of service near Alexandria, Virginia, 1865 Jun 17, under provisions of special orders from War Department, Adjutant General's Office, Washington, D. C., dated 1865 May 18, by Edward Rose, First Lieutenant 56th Infantry, Massachusetts Volunteers, Assistant Commissary of Musters, Second Division, 9th Army Corps.
Activies included: Battle of Boydton Plank Road, Hatcher's Run, Virginia, 1864 Oct 27-28; Siege of Petersburg till 1865 Apr 2; The (the 9th offensive) Before Petersburg, Virginia, (Capture of Fort Mahone), 1865 April 2; Appomattox Campaign 1865 Mar 28-Apr 2; Pursuit of Lee 1865 Apr 3-9. Appomattox Court House 1865 Apr 9; Surrender of Lee and his army; Moved to City Point, thence to Washington and Alexandria 1865 April 20-27; Grand Review 1865 May 23.
The Regiment lost during service 3 Officers and 29 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 10 Enlisted men by disease. Total 42.
