Welcome to the Clinton County, New York Project!

Clinton County was formed in 1788 when it was split off from Washington County. Then in 1799 part of it was used to form Essex County. Parts were taken from Clinton County again in 1802 to form St. Lawrence County and then in 1808, to form Franklin County.

My ancestors lived in West Chazy, Clinton Co., NY in the early 1800s. They settled mostly in Plattsburgh and West Chazy. I'm still looking for documentation for a link between Timothy Lewis 1780-1865 (my 3rd great grandfather) and James Lewis 1755-1790. I have a lot of reference material including the County Book "History of Clinton & Franklin Cos" printed in1880 (reprint 1978). I'm happy to share what I have.
