Clan History
Clan Broun (commonly Brown)
Arms of the Chief of clan Broun, The Broun of Colstoun, Baronet of Colstoun |
There is an ancient family, the Brouns of Colstoun, a younger branch of which currently enjoys a baronetcy. According to tradition this clan was founded soon after the Conquest by a French warrior bearing the arms of the then royal family of France with which he claimed alliance. The chief's arms even bear the three gold lilies of France.
The more usual form of the surname Broun is Brown. It is an extremely common name and is usually a reference to coloring. The historian, Black, asserts that Browns of Celtic origin might have been named after their descent from native judges, who were known as brehons.
The Scottish Lowland name of Brown achieved prominence in the early twelfth century in East Lothian.
