Pas aisé, n’est pas à son aise : not prosperous. ^[1] The census taker's assessment of affluence is not based exclusively on the size of the grave and the number of boats, but also possibly takes into account the social prestige of a person and his relationships with the garrison. ^[2]
Brevet du roi: a grant by the King. Grants were distributed by the King of France and gave residents ownership of a house, land, or a "grave"
Chaloupe: shallop. A light sailboat used mainly for coastal fishing.
Galets: man-made cobble
Grave: a cobbled beach where the fish was laid out to dry and the necessary fishing apparatus like racks, cabins, etc...). Also called a fishing room (section of beach) or strand (gravel/rocky shore area for curing/drying fish). The number of boats (chaloupes) allowed per "grave" depended on its size. “Once a chaloupe was laden with cod it returned to the stage where the fish was unloaded, headed, gutted, split and salted in preparation for curing. The temperate climate of Atlantic Canada suited the dry salt-cod curing process and the fish were usually laid out on extensive natural cobble beaches (graves), on man-made cobble galets, on racks of wooden flakes (vigneaux or flagues) or on beds of fir and spruce boughs (rances).” ^[3] See maps of graves at Pointe-Verte and Petit-Plaisance in 1699 ^[4]

Sr. CLAUDE BARAT, natif de Troye en Champagne aagé de 40 ans marié depuis 17 ans à JEANNE QUISENCE qu'il épousa à St. Malo et qui est à présent à Plaisance avec luy, a 2 petits garçons, 4 fusils, point de bestiaux, une maison et une grave apellée La Fontaine en dehors du fort sur la rade au pied de la redoutte Royale par ordre de Mr. Brouillant du 28 octobre 1696. Il occupe cette grave depuis un an mais ne luy ayant pas réussy et y ayant même baucoup perdu par ce que tout son poisson s'y est gâté et reconnaissant qu'il ne peut jamais y rien faire de bon à cause du terrain quy n'y est pas propre, il demende une autre place. Il en avait déjà eu une au Petit Plaisance qu'occupe à présent St. Louis et La Ruine qu'il avait abandonné pour venir en France par necessité de ses afaires. Depuis étant greffier de cette collonie, il serait nécessaire qu'il fut posté du còté de la grande grave afin qu'il fut aisé à tous ceux quy ont afaires à luy de le trouver. Sy l'on faisait une nouvelle répartition de toutes les graves il serait aisé de luy en trouver une.	Sr. CLAUDE BARAT, native of Troye in Champagne, aged 40, married for 17 years to JEANNE QUISENCE whom he married in St. Malo and who is now in Plaisance with him, has 2 little boys, 4 guns, no cattle, a house and a grave (cobbled beach for drying fish) called the fountain outside the fort on the harbor at the foot of the Royal outwork by order of Mr. Brouillant of October 28, 1696. He has occupied this grave for a year but not having succeeded and having even lost much because all his fish spoiled there and recognizing that he can never do anything good there because of the land which is not suitable, he asks for another place. He had already had one at Petit Plaisance which St. Louis now occupies and La Ruine which he had abandoned to come to France out of necessity for his business. Since he was clerk of this colony, it would be necessary for him to be posted on the side of the grande grave so that it would be easy for all those who have business with him to find him. A 2 filles et un garçon point mariés, 5 fusils, point de bestiaux. A une maison et grave du côté de la grande grave venant à l'ouest pour 3 chaloupes par ordre de Mr. Brouillant Gouverneur. Sa grave a 10 toises de larges et 70 de longueur. Il est armurier du fort depuis 2 ans mais sa grave étant sur le terrain des vaisseaux marchands, il faudroit la luy changer. N'est pas aisé.	JEAN CHEVALLIER, native of La Rochelle, aged 41, married in La Rochelle 18 years ago. His wife is now here and is named FRANÇOIZE GREZE. Has 2 girls and a boy, none married, 5 guns, no livestock. Has a house and grave (cobbled beach for drying fish) on the side of the grande grave coming to the west for 3 shallops by order of Mr. Brouillant Gouvernor. His grave is 10 toises wide and 70 long. Le Sr. OSTENDEAU père et mère morte. Ses enfants mineurs au nombre de deux garçons et une fille ont une grave accordée par brevet du Roy du 4e juin 1698 sous le nom dudit Sr. Ostendeau. Le Sr. Beraud est leur tuteur. La grave est de 60 toises de long et 7 de larges pour 3 challoupes, joignant du côté de l'est le Sr. de Monsegueur et du ouest Simon Gilbert. Ainsy sont encor sur le terrain des vx. marchands, on peut leur redonner celle que leur père possedait autre fois entre Parys à présent Jaldaye et Rochefort par ordre du Roy qui est à présent séparé entre plusieurs personnes sans aucun fondement ny ordre.	Sr. OSTENDEAU father and mother is dead. His minor children, two boys and a girl, have a grave (cobbled beach for drying fish) given by King's grant of June 4, 1698 under the name of the said Sr. Ostendeau. Sr. Beraud is their guardian. The grave is 60 toises long and 7 wide for 3 boats, joining Sr. de Monsegueur on the east side and Simon Gilbert on the west. They are still on the ground for merchant ships, we can give them back the one that their father once owned between Parys now Jaldaye and Rochefort by order of the King which is now divided between several people without any basis or order.

N'est point marié, a 5 fusils, point de bestiaux, a une maison et une grave bornée du côté de l'est par la rivière Dascant, du côté du sud par le Sr. Beraud Monsegueur et du côté du suest par les Sr. ostendeau, du côté du norouest à la mer, accordé au Sr. Vidal Paris par brevet du Roy du 15 mars 1696 duquel il a achepté par contrat du 6 juillet 1696, lequel Paris s'est retiré en France. Cette grave est marquée contenir 36 toises de long et 28 de larges pour 5 chaloupes. Est à son aize. Cette grave ny touttes les suivantes ne sont plus sur le terrain des vx. marchands.	JEAN de JALDAYE, native of St. Jean de Lutz, aged 32. Is not married, has 5 guns, no livestock, has a house and a grave (cobbled beach for drying fish) bounded on the east side by the Dascant River, on the south side by Sr. Beraud Monsegueur and on the south side by the Sr. ostendeau, on the northwest side to the sea, granted to Sr. Vidal Paris by King's patent of March 15, 1696 from which he purchased by contract of July 6, 1696, from which Paris withdrew to France. This grave is marked to contain 36 toises long and 28 wide for 5 shallops. He is prosperous. This grave and all the following ones are no longer on the ground of the merchant ships.

Depuis cette habitation a été vendue pour mille francs par le supérieur des pères récollets audit Courtiau en 92, lequel emporta l'argent que ledit Courtiau luy en avait donne montant à 500£. Il devrait donc 500£ de reste. Mais depuis le roi lui ayant donné un brevet, ledit Courtiau prétend ne point payer lesdits 500£. Cependant les p. r. prétendraient reprendre cette habitation disant qu'ayant appartenue à leur église, elle n'a pu être vendue par le supérieur. Mais comme ils la possédaient sans titre n'ayant jamais eu de brevet du Roy ny même celuy de qui on l'avait achetée pour la leur donner, et Courtiau ayant un brevet du Roy, je crois la prétention des pères récolets mal fondée et que même Courtiau ne devrait point les payer des 300£ (sic) qui restent. Au reste cet habitant n'est pas aisé. There is a lawsuit for this dwelling with the Recollect fathers because the said dwelling had been purchased 10 or 12 years ago by the inhabitants of Sr. Jouglas who owned it without a grant from the King or any other title, which inhabitants donated it to the said Recollect fathers. Since then this house was sold for a thousand francs by the superior of the Recollect fathers to the said Courtiau in 92, who took the money that the said Courtiau had given him amounting to £500. He would therefore have £500 left to pay. But since the king gave him a grant, the said Courtiau claims not to pay the said £500. However p. r. would claim to take back this dwelling saying that having belonged to their church, it could not have been sold by the superior. But as they owned it without a title having never had a grant from the King nor even the one from whom it had been purchased to give it to them, and Courtiau having a grant from the King, I believe the claim of the Récolet fathers to be ill-founded and that even Courtiau should not pay them the remaining £300 (sic). Besides, this inhabitant is not well off.

On peut luy donner une grave à défricher au devant de celle de son bau père sans incommoder personne. Il faut icy beaucoup plus de grave qu'à Plaisance à cause qu'elle n'est pas sy bonne et étant plus proche de la mer, elle est plus sujette aux brumes. Doit laisser cette grave à ses enfants et aller chercher à en faire un autre pour luy dans quelques dégrast. Il faut la laisser pour les vaisseaux marchands sur le terrain desquels elle est. Elle a été occupée cette année par Mr. de St. OVIDE qui a fait faire la pêche mais il n'en veut plus. Est assez à son aize. Sa grave a 125 toises de long et 18 de larges. L'occupe depuis 18 ans du côté de la Marquise joignant Pierre Pisk. Demende un brevet du Roy. N'est pas aizé.	JEAN BORDONCLE known as JEAN de BORDEAUX, native of Bordeaux, aged 42, widowed for 2 years, has 2 unmarried daughters, 2 guns, no livestock, a house and its outbuildings and a grave (cobbled beach for drying fish) for 4 shallops by verbal order of Mr. Brouillant. Has occupied it for 18 years on the side of the Marquise joining Pierre Pisk. Request a grant from the King. Is not well-off.
DOMINIQUE DUCLOS, natif de Toulouze, aagé de 23 ans, marié, sa femme est en France et se nomme ANNE IRLANDOISE, n'a point d'enfants, 2 fusils, point de bestiaux, chirurgien de son métier et frère du chirurgien major. N'a ny maison ny grave. Demende la même place que Jean Dubourdieu et il serait plus juste de luy accorder, le dit Dubourdieu pouvant augmenter celle où il est et n'estant pas d'ailleurs des gents de bonne conduitte au lieu que ledit Duclos est nécessaire au petit Plaisance attendu sa profession.	DOMINIQUE DUCLOS, native of Toulouze, aged 23, married, his wife is in France and is called ANNE IRLANDOISE, has no children, 2 rifles, no livestock, surgeon by trade and brother of the surgeon major. Does not have a house and is not well-off. Has been here for 15 years, has 2 rifles, no livestock, has a house and its outbuildings and a grave (cobbled beach for drying fish) for 4 shallops at the northwest tip of the entrance to the harbor on the small grave joining Jean Debourdieu by order of Mr. Brouillant. Requests a grant from the King. He is quite well-off.
JEAN de BOURDIEU, natif de Marennes, aagé de 40 ans, marié icy depuis 15 ans à MARIE BOUCHÉ, a un garçon et une fille point mariés, un fusil, 2 chèvres, une maison et ses dépendances et une grave où il dit qu'il n'y en a pas pour une chaloupe, par ordre de Mr. Brouillant sur la petite grave. Demanderait une autre place entre Jean de Bourdeaux et la pointe du còté de la Marquise où il y en aurait pour 3 chaloupes et brevet du Roy pour cette place mais comme c'est un paresseux, il vaut mieux donner cette place à Dominique Duclos qui la demande d'autant plus que ledit Bourdieu peut agrandir celle où il est s'il veut travailler.	JEAN de BOURDIEU, native of Marennes, aged 40, married here for 15 years to MARIE BOUCHÉ, has a son and a daughter not married, a rifle, 2 goats, a house and its outbuildings and a grave (cobbled beach for drying fish) where he says that there is no space for even one shallop, by order of Mr. Brouillant on the small grave. On suplierait sa Majesté de vouloir bien donner quelque chose pour faire accommoder la chapelle comme 300£ et quelques ornements pour la ditte chapelle moyennant quoy les dits habitants entretiendraient un aumosnier à proportion de leurs chaloupes et graves.	We would beg His Majesty to be willing to give something to accommodate the chapel, such as £300 and some ornaments for the said chapel in return for which the said inhabitants would maintain a chaplain in proportion to their boats and graves..
Entre la veuve de le Roy et Aubin il y a deux chaloupes de graves vacantes, plus entre Jean de Bourdeaux et la montagne à l'ouest sud ouest environ quatre chaloupes, plus entre Tarabillon et le Sr. Labrosse dans l'habitation duquel Mr. de St. Ovide a fait pêche cette année par louage il y a environ sept chaloupes de grosse grave sur laquelle on peut faire mettre de la petite grave. Il y a de plus entre Moissans et le Sr. Jourdeval le long de la côte un endroit nommé le Ruisseau où on pourrait placer deux habitants avec de la grave à faire pour trois chaloupes chacun et suivant tout cela, il y aurait dans tout le petit Plaisance de la grave pour quatre vingt chaloupes.    On peut penser que l’appréciation de Brisacier ne se fonde pas exclusivement sur des critères économiques que sont l’étendue de la grave et le nombre de chaloupes, mais prend également en compte le prestige social de l’individu et la nature des relations qu’il entretient avec la garnison.
