Samuel Sowden was born about Mar 1808 and was baptised on 8 April 1808 at Saint Martin on Looe Bay, Cornwall^[1] and again 24 April 1808 in Morval, Cornwall^[2], the son of Henry (Souden) Sowden (bef.1763-bef.1846) and Rebecca (Hicks) Sowden (bef.1764-bef.1847).

Samuel Sowden is said to have married Ann (Hawke) Sowden (~1811 - ) however a record of this has not as yet been identified.

In the 1841 England Census Samuel is said to be aged 30 years and employed as an Agricultural Labourer. He resides with his wife Ann and 4 children, Joseph aged 7, William aged 3 and Ann aged 4 months, at Copshorn, Bormin, Cornwall^[3].

In the 1851 England Census, Samuel is said to be 43 years and employed as an Agricultural Labourer. He resides with his wife Ann and 3 children, Joseph aged 14, Ann aged 10 and Jane aged 7 years at Clerkenwater, Hellend, Cornwall. Also in the household is Samuel's sister in law, Elizabeth Hawke aged 37 and unmarried^[4].
