Biography

Jim Sowden was born in St Ive, Cornwall, England.

James was born on 8 Jan 1869, in St Ive, Cornwall, England. He was the son of John Sowden and Ann Jeffery. ^[1]

In the 1871 census James (age 2) was the son of John Sowden at Shank House, Cramlington, Northumberland, England. ^[2]

James (age 7) arrived in in South Australia, Australia in 1876 with his parents John and Ann, and brother William. ^[3]

James, child of John Sowden, married Sarah Ann Salter on 1 October 1890, in North Adelaide, South Australia.^[4]

They moved to Fremantle, Western Australia in about 1892, and James opened his first butcher shop on the corner of Hampton Road and South Street, South Fremantle Western Australia in 1894. Between Florence Street (now King William Street) and Sydney Street, South Fremantle James established another butcher's shop and other family members joined him. It didn't come without financial challenges though, when his shop was burgled in 1900. The first listing for Sowden's butcher shop appeared in the 1901 Post Office Directories. The original butchers shop no longer stands today, however their family butcher shop, now a patisserie still stands proudly on the corner previously known as Mandurah Road (now South Terrace) and Jenkin Street, a little weather beaten in South Fremantle, Western Australia.

In 1910, James and Sarah were registered to vote in South Fremantle, Fremantle, Western Australia, Australia. They were residing at 9 Inverleigh Street, South Fremantle, Western Australia, and James' occupation was butcher. ^[5]

James passed away on 18 January 1942, in Fremantle, Western Australia and was buried in Fremantle Cemetery, Palmyra, Melville City, Western Australia, Australia. ^[6]
