U.S. Rep. Henry Southard performed Patriotic Service in New Jersey in the American Revolution.

Henry Southard was a Revolutionary War Veteran. He was also in the New Jersey State House of Rep (Somerset Co., ) for 9 years and in the US Congress 1801-1811 and 1815-21. He was listed as a slaveholder in 1808, 1810 and 1813. (Somerset County Hist. Soc Quar Vol 6 page 96) One description by a contemporary calls him, " a plain, unpretending man of good solid sense".

Military records at New Jersey State Library in Trenton show that Henry enlisted in August, 1776 as a private in the Somerset County Militia under Capt. Gavin McCoy. He served 4 tours and was in the battles of Ash Swamp, Short Hills and Red Bank. In November, 1777, he was made a "Wagoner" in Capt. Jacob Ten Eyck's Co., and in October, 1778 he was appointed to the post of Teamster in Hinman's Team Brigade of the Wagonmaster (James Abel / Abeel) Abeel-41 General's Dept and was employed in carting commissary stores from Kings Ferry.

The records say he received from Joseph Lewis ( a relative), Quartermaster at Morristown, NJ., certificates for a total of $13,763.00 for carting. A special census of Rev War pensioners for NJ in 1840 showed Henry, at 92 years., living with his daughter and son-in-law, Samuel S. Doty, in Bernards Twp. His wife Sarah had died 9 years before this and he died 2 years later.

Henry's will 2835 R leaves to his daughter, Sarah Southard Doty, "the house in which I now live and the land --- located on the east side of the road between Morristown and the Basking Ridge meeting house in the Great Swamp."

According to the church records of the Presbyterian Church in Basking Ridge, on Nov 4, 1810 a child named Diana was baptized and is listed as a black child of H Southard family, indicating that Henry Southard may have had slaves or servants. Also according to the same records, Henry is listed as a church elder. The pastor Dr. Robert Finley of the church must have had a large influence on this family as Henry named one of his sons Finley Southard and Henry's son Lot named one of his sons Robert Finley Southard.

Henry's will is on file at Trenton ( 2835 R). He was Congressman from Somerset county from 1801-1811 and from 1817 to 1821, in which latter year his son, Samuel Lewis Southard, became United States Senator.
