Biography

William Leander Sorrells was born December 25, 1835 in Tennessee, the son of Andrew Erwin Sorrells and Nancy Randle (Brooks) Sorrells.

Williams siblings were:

  • Mary Ann (Sorrells) Shankel (1829-1925)
  • Susan English (Sorrells) Hodge (1831-1900)
  • David Brooks Sorrells Sr. (1833-1913)
  • Amanda Elvira (Sorrells) Shankle (1841-1915)
  • Nancy Marilda Sorrells (1843-1892)
  • Andrew Madison Sorrells (1849-1892)


William married Elizabeth Lavonia Pryor on June 20, 1866 at Elizabeth's family home in Dallas County, Arkansas. The ceremony was performed by James R. Harvey, an ordained minister. William was 30 years old, Elizabeth was 18, born in 1848 in Dallas County, the daughter of Philip H. Pryor and Mary E. Head.[1]

The children of William and Elizabeth, all born in Arkansas, were:[2][3][4]

  • James Byron Sorrells (b. abt. 1875)

  • Mary Adeline Sorrells (b. abt. 1879)
  • William Malcolm Sorrels (b. abt. 1881)
  • Robt Emery Sorrels (b. abt. 1884)
  • Lester Bradford Sorrels (b. abt. 1886)


The 1880 U.S. Census lists William at the age of 44 with his wife Elizabeth and six children living in the town of Holly Springs in Holly Springs Township of Dallas County, Arkansas where William worked as a blacksmith. Living with them is William's 70 year old widowed mother Nancy.[2]

By the 1900 Census, William was 67 years old and Elizabeth at 52 had been married for about 34 years and were shown with four children, William M. Sorrells age 19, Robert E. Sorrells age 16, Lasker (Lester) Sorrells age 15, and Mary A. Sorrells age 11 living at home on their own farm in Holly Springs Township.[3]

The 1910 Census shows William at 74 years of age and Elizabeth at 62, with their youngest son, 24 year old Lester and his 22 year old wife Frankie living on the family farm in Holly Springs Township.[4]


William Leander Sorrells died in July of 1916 and was buried at the Holly Springs Cemetery in Holly Springs, Dallas County, Arkansas. Elizabeth survived him and passed away in 1933, she was buried beside him. [5][6]
