John George Smythe was born on 3 September 1873 in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, the son of Susannah (Lee) Smythe and John James Smyth.^[1]

He married Ethel (McHutchison) Smith (1879-1941) in 1898 in Victoria.^[2] Their children were:^{[citation needed]}
