Thomas Smith was born about 1846-49 in Canada West, later called Ontario, but details are unknown. There were many men named Thomas Smith! Which one is relevant? No middle name or other information is known.
The 1871 Canada census showed Thomas Smith, age 25, lived at Belleville, Ontario. The census said he was born in Ontario, of Irish nationality, a shoemaker, a member of the Church of England. Unclear if he was married; the census doesn't name a wife. Is he the correct person?
Thomas Smith is known mainly from later records of his wife, variously called "Anna Maria Simmons" and "Hannah Marie Simmons", who remarried in 1882 to James Clazie at Thurlow, Ontario, about 7 km / 4 miles from Belleville.
Cemetery records show a Thomas Smith, born about 1848, who died on 6 July 1862, buried at Port Hope, Ontario, just 83 km from Belleville. He MIGHT be the correct Thomas Smith - husband of Anna or Hannah - but records are inconclusive.
