Biography
Adelaide was born in 1913 [1] [2]. She was delivered by native American midwife in the Smith home in Lafitte. Her Smith grandparents lived with them. After a hurricane destroyed the levies in Lafitte for the third time, her father bought a farm in Hammond.
She attended public school in Hammond graduating from Hammond High in 1931. She attended Southeastern Louisiana University before enrolling in Nursing School at Big Charity Hospital in New Orleans. She was Dick Gates' office nurse until they married in 1936.
Their first home was in his mother's home at 109 North Pine St, Hammond where they lived on the second floor of the home.
After moving to Long Beach, MS, she was active in the Women's Auxiliary at Gulfport Memorial Hospital, the Altar Guild at St. Peter's by the Sea, and the League of Women Voters. [3]
She passed away in 1981.
