Biography

John Smith was born in Pennsylvania around 1781. He migrated to Martin County, Indiana around 1815-1820. His route to Indiana took him through Virginia and Tennessee.

He died after 1829, probably in Martin County, Indiana [1].

Research Notes

John Smith can be found in the 1830 census in Martin County, Indiana.

His son Jonas was born in Virginia circa 1810 [2]. His son Joseph was born in Tennessee about 1815/1816. [3].

His son, Elias, left a death certificate, 4 Aug 1916 saying his father, John Smith, was born in Pennsylvania. [4].

Dulcena Westrope is probably NOT the wife of this John Smith. Dulcena married John Smith of a similar timeframe, but he and she can be found well established in Morgan County, Illinois.

John is not found after the 1830 census. He may be buried somewhere nearby that is now part of the Crane Naval Warfare Center.
