Henry William Smith was born on 5 March 1912, in Black Oak, Craighead County, Arkansas, to parents, Charles Franklin Smith and Ada Elizabeth (Austin) Smith.[1] He is the namesake of his grandfather, Henry William Austin.
On 9 February 1920, at age 7, he resided in Nettleton, Craighead County, Arkansas with his father, Charles, age 67, his mother, Ada, age 41, his sister, Minnie, age 11, and his brother, Boyd, age 3. His father was working as a laborer, outside the home.[2]
Henry’s mother, Ada, passed away on 28 July 1928. She died due to tuberculosis. Henry was 16 years old.[3]
On 9 April 1930, he still resided in Nettleton, Craighead County, Arkansas. He was 18 years old, and his occupation was farming. He was not working at that time, and was listed on the unemployment schedule. His father, widowed, was 78 years old; his sister, Minnie was 21 and working as a cook in a café, and his younger brother, Boyd, was 14.[4]
On 16 October 1940, when he was 28 years old, Henry registered for the World War II draft, and served as a Sargent in the U.S. Army.[5]
He married Mildred Carter in Craighead County, Arkansas on 19 September 1942.[6]
Then, on 26 Jaunary 1948, he married Marie M. Loescher in Benton, Saline County, Arkansas.[7]
He and wife, Marie, are listed in the 1949 Little Rock, Arkansas, City Directory. His occupation is identified as a lineman.[8]
At age 38, he and Marie, age 39, resided on New County Road, in Eastman Township, Pulaski County, Arkansas on 21 April 1950. He was employed with the Power and Light Company as a journeyman lineman.[9]
On 13 May 1997, Henry passed away at age 85,[10] and is buried in the Hillside Garden at Rest Hills Memorial Park, North Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas,[11] alongside his wife, Marie, who passed on 1 Mar 1996.[12]
