Biography

Flag of Cambridgeshire (adopted 2015)
Mary (Smith) Knighton was born in Cambridgeshire, England.

Mary Ann Smith was born on November 15, 1864 in Glassmoor Fen, Whittlesey. She was the fifth child of William Smith and Jemima Willmot.[1]

In the 1871 census, Mary is living with her family at Slate Barn Drove, Whittlesey.[2]

In the 1881 census, Mary is working as a domestic servant for the Shepperson family of London Street, Whittlesey.[3] Interestingly, her daughter Sarah would also work as a servant for this family in 1901.

On July 16, 1883, Mary married Jabez Knighton in Holme, Huntingdonshire.[4] The couple had seven children; Sarah, Ruth, Esther, Ernest, George, Samuel and Florence.

In 1891, Mary lived with her family at Exhibition Road in Holme.[5]

Mary was baptised at St Giles' Church in Holme as an adult on March 11, 1898.[6] She died less than a month later on April 7, aged only 33 years old. Did Mary know that she was deathly ill, prompting her baptism? Her cause of death as noted on her death certificate was 'syncope, embolism and paralysis'.[7] She was buried at Holme on April 9, 1898.[8]
