Biography

Winifred Jane Smith was born 1876 in Castlemaine, Victoria. She was the daughter of Samuel Smith and Ann Elizabeth (Sutton) Smith.^[1][2]

Winifred was an army nurse of World War I, who was decorated with the Royal Red Cross at Buckingham Palace for devotion to duty.^[3]

Winifred commenced training at the Eye and Ear Hospital in 1907, and during her training nursed at Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital and Royal Melbourne Hospital. After finishing her training she was a ward sister at Royal Melbourne. She joined the Australian Army Nursing Service in 1915, and was in charge of a number of wards at Herefield Hospital in England, until she was discharged In 1917.^[3]

In 1917 she married Sergeant William Abbott Watson at St. Margaret's Church, London.^[3][4]

Winifred died in Heidelberg, Victoria on 24 December 1951.^[5][3][6]
