Elizabeth (Smith) Hare was born in Yorkshire, England.

Elizabeth Smith was baptised in the town of Easingwold, Yorkshire, on 7 July 1822 and was the daughter of Thomas Smith.[1]


Elizabeth married Robert Hare in Easingwold in October 1843 and they had eight children, however most of them died young.[2]

On the 1851 census, Robert, an agricultural labourer, and Elizabeth are living in Outgang, North Newbald, with their children: Thomas (6 years), Dobson (3 years) and Dinah (1 year).[3]

On the 1861 census, Robert, an agricultural labourer, and Elizabeth are living in Huntington, Yorkshire, with their children: Dinah (11 years), Robert (6 years), Barbara (4 years), William (2 years) and James (2 months).[4]

On the 1871 census, Robert, an agricultural labourer, and Elizabeth are living in Welburn, Yorkshire, with their son, William, aged 12 years.[5]

On the 1881 census, Robert, a labourer, and Elizabeth are living at 5 Cobden St, Stockton, Durham, with their sons, Thomas, aged 36 years, and William, aged 21 years, who are both labourers. They also have a boarder, John Collitt, living with them.[6]

On the 1891 census, Robert, a gasworks labourer, and Elizabeth are living at 25 Millbank St, Stockton, Durham, with their son, Thomas, who also works in the gasworks.[7]

Elizabeth Smith died of apoplexy, aged 73 years, on 5 May 1896.[8][9]
