Biography

Mary was born in 1805. She was the daughter of William Smith and Mary Thompson. She married John Verity (b. 1798) on 17 Apr 1829. They immigrated to New York and later lived in Chicago. She passed away in 1874.

Research Notes

Identification of Parents: Mary's parents are not identified on her marriage record,^[4] and several Mary Smiths lived in Yorkshire during 1800-1830. The names of Mary (Smith) Verity's parents were documented on the baptism record of her son, William Smith Verity.^[3] Her marriage record shows she resided in Leeds at the time of her wedding.

Various records cited in this profile show Mary was born in either 1805 or 1806. If only 1805-1806 birth records recorded near Leeds, Yorkshire are considered, then only one matching birth record exists: dated 18-Nov-1805, parents William (clothier) and Mary Smith of Rawdon in Guiseley Parish.^[1]

One birth record from the Church of England was found for Mary Smith, daughter of William Smith (mother’s name was not recorded), born on 12 Apr 1805, from Quarry Hill.^[14] However, a matching Church of England burial record was found on 12 Oct 1806 for Mary Smith, daughter of William Smith, aged 18 months, from Quarry Hill.^[15] These records prove Mary (b. 12 Apr 1805) could not have been Mary (Smith) Verity.

A birth record for a second Mary Smith, baptized on 21 Aug 1805 in Tickhill, Yorkshire was found. Her parents were also named William and Mary.^[16] This candidate can be dismissed because a marriage record from Tickhill (4 Nov 1834) and the 1851 census prove Mary of Tickhill was the wife of John Ridgill.^[17][18]
