Lillian Winifred Smith was born on 30th October 1919 in Herberton, Queensland, Australia. She was the second daughter of Samuel Smith and Ivy Cross. [1]
Lillian was registered as a nurse.Serving with the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) as a Nurse (Lieutenant), on 21st January 1943 Lillian transferred to the Second Australian Imperial Force and was posted to the 2/7th Australian General Hospital. [2] Aged 25 years, she passed away of illness on 17th June 1945 in Brisbane, Queensland and is buried in Lutwyche Cemetery. [3] Lillian Winifred Smith's name is located at panel 96 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial, Canberra. [4]
Lillian's older sister, Valrie also a nurse with the AANS, was captured by the Japanese in February 1942 whilst escaping from Singapore and became a prisoner-of-war; returning home just months after Lillian's death.
