Agnes (Smith) Brown was an early resident of the Scottish Settlement in Argyle, Illinois.

Agnes was born in 1863. She was the daughter of Scottish immigrants Robert Smith and Agnes Greenlees [1]

Her family lived in Harlem Township Winnebago County Illinois and were early residents of the Scottish Settlement in Argyle, Illinois. [2]

She married William Brown in 1891. [3]

They farmed in Harlem. [4][5]

In 1920 they were living in Los Angeles. [6]

They moved back to Rockford before 1926 where William diex in 1926. [7][8]

Agnes passed away in 1950. [9]

Obituary

Mrs. Agnes Brown, a lifelong resident of Winnebago County and for the past 35 years a resident at 216 Sheridan street, died suddenly last night at midnight in the home of a son, Edward G. Brown, rural route No. 1, Caledonia. Mrs. Brown, who was 86 years old, had been active until her sudden death.

She was born Dec. 15, 1863, on a Winnebago county farm near Argyle. Her father, Robert Smith, was a pioneer in the Scotch settlement there. In 1885 she married William Brown at Argyle. Mrs. Brown was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Rockford.

Survivors include the son: a brother, William Smith, Caledonia; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her husband died in 1927 and two sisters, Mary and Martha, and a brother, Daniel A. Smith, preceded Mrs. Brown in death.

Services will be conducted at 1:30 p. m. Thursday from the McAllister-Julian-Poorman funeral home, 304 North 5th street. The Rev. H. G. Whitfield, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, will officiate and burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home between 7 and 9 o'clock Wednesday evening. [10]
