Christopher Smith migrated to New England during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640). (See The Directory, by R. C. Anderson, p. 308) Join: Puritan Great Migration Project Discuss: pgm
Christopher Smith's origins are currently unknown. His birth is estimated as 1620 based solely on his wife's known birth.
Christopher Smith first appeared in New England records 17 April 1640, when he was allowed to purchase from Jonas Humphrey his former grant of 5 acres of land in Dedham, Massachusetts Bay Colony.[1] Christopher was admitted into the Dedham church in October 1642.[2] He signed the Dedham Covenant, but on what date is not known.[3] He was made freeman on 10 May 1643 in Massachusetts Bay Colony.[4]
His death was recorded at Dedham on 07 November 1676.[10][7]
The inventory of his estate was taken 8 December 1676. Mary Smith and John Smith, (son of Christopher & Mary), made oath concerning its completeness on 13 Dec. 1676. On the same day Mary Smith, widow, John Smith and Daniel Fisher, all of Dedham posted bond.[11]
Wife Martha (Metcalf) Stow disproved:
Savage (IV:111) stated that Christopher's wife was "Martha, d. of Michael Metcalf the first, wid. of William Bignall, perhaps as sec w... the Metcalf pedigree in Geaneal. Reg. VI:173 says she took a 3d h a Stow;" this error was carried on by Clarence Almon Torrey in his New England Marriages Prior to 1700, 1986, p. 67, although he placed a question mark after "Christopher." However, the error is corrected by the will of Michael Metcalf senr, 15 9m 1664, who made bequests "To my Daughter Martha Stow" and "To my Daughter Stowes Eldest sonne, which she had by her first husband, Wm Brignall" (Abstract in Reg 6:172-3). Mary Fairbanks Metcalf Smith's identity is proved by her father's will, that of Michael Metcalf Sr., and the registration of her marriages.[13]
Savage: Makes a mess of Christopher's wife's marriages.[14]
