Biography

Robert Smellie was born in Scotland.

Robert Russell Smellie was born at Gorbals, Lanarkshire on the 7th of July 1832, and baptised on the 29th of July, the son of William Smellie and Margaret Russell.^[1]

Robert wed Jessie Thomas Kennedy on the 3rd of November 1864.^[2]

Robert wed Amy Hepsie Wright, a widow, at Brisbane on the 14th of January 1875.^[4]

Amy Smellie died in 1884.

He built his impressive red brick Smellie's Building in Edward Street, in the central business district of Brisbane. It was originally a three story building, built in 1888. The building was flooded in the 1893 Brisbane flood, and expanded to five stories in the late 1890's. The building is now an office space, Heritage listed, and known as Old Mineral House.^[5]

Robert Russell Smellie passed away at Brisbane, in the Colony of Queensland, in 1898.^[6]

He was survived by a daughter who moved to New Zealand.
