Stephen's birth date is taken from an IGI ancestral record and is not confirmed. While we know he was from Nottingham, the same IGI record shows Stapleford as the location of the birth. This again, is not confirmed. Another ancestral entry shows baptism as St. Nicholas, Nottingham.

Stephen is shown as a master clock maker per the marriage certificate of his son William. This is also confirmed by William's birth certificate.

The 1881 census shows him living at Allum Bridge, Church Hulme, Cheshire, England [FHL film 1341845, PRO Ref RG11, Piece 3532, Folio 63, Page 4]. It confirms his occupation as clock maker, that he was boarding at this address, that at this point he was a widower, 54 years of age and that his place of birth was Nottingham, Notts. Stephen's death per the certified copy of an entry of death reads as follows: First March 1903 ___ ____ Workhouse, Bagthorpe, Stephen Smedley, Male, 82 years, Formerly a Clock maker (journeyman) of 18 Cherry Street, Cause of death "Scurle decay", certified by E Hawkes, Informant: N. E. Gilley, Master, Kettingham Workhouse, Bagthorpe, Registered 2 March 1903, Registrar C Wyles. Died at the age of 82.
